As much as I hate to admit it, I'd say as a whole, the UK put out better bands.

Man this is a question and a half.

We can say they both shite on every other country.
France has a law that they can only play American and British music on the radio for so long.

I thought this would generate more of a discussion.

Great idea for a topic but it's such a vast topic you probably have to be more specific. There's almost TOO much greatness for just one thread on the subject in your thread title.

I think USA wins. Hip hop pushes us over the top.

Does France get mad that it's best artists sing in English? (See Phoenix)

United states, and it's very close making it quite debatable.

Is that the response Shadeaux was looking for with his post?

Agreed, but I would say it's more like 2 million miles.

I think when you consider the variety that comes out of the US compared to the UK, the US takes it. The blues/hip-hop/soul/rap bring something to the table that the UK just can't compare to.

What bands/artists do you feel separate the UK?

The mere fact that you include "Hip Hop" in your argument for the US being superior only makes me want to say "3 million miles" now.

The fact that you wrote this renders your opinion meaningless, imo.

The U.S. has produced much more original and varied music:
All of Hip Hop
All of Funk
All of Country (which I hate, but it's still there)
All of southern rock
All of the grunge scene
Disco
The origins of House
What am I missing?

Also, the US has produced more and better individual artists.

Michael Jackson
Prince
Elvis Presley
Madonna
Chuck Berry
Roy Orbison
Tom Petty
Otis Redding
Beck
Dave Matthews
John Mayer
James Brown
Springsteen
Janis Joplin
Jack White
Bob Seger
How many am I missing?

God knows how many UK bands would of existed had it not been for Robert Johnson and Elvis.

But I give a slight edge to the UK for The Beatles, Stones, and Zeppelin.
