Switzerland to vote on $25 minimum wage

A vote on Sunday to establish a minimum wage of $25 an hour would make mostly immigrants here in agriculture, housekeeping, and catering among the world's highest paid unskilled workforce.

But some who would be eligible for the higher wage worry that it may do more harm than good.

"If my employer had to pay me more money, he wouldn't be able to keep me on and I'd lose the job."
At least their unskilled workforce is smarter than ours

that's great and all but the standard of living there is so high it doesn't translate. It's one of the most expensive places to live in the world.

Switzerland's system of referendums is very interesting. They just recently passed immigration quotas.

Switzerland has roughly 7.6 million people I believe. What are we at, 307 million?
I hope this becomes the fast food workers rallying cry

Yeah, I definitely think the US needs to raise our minimum wage, but not to $25. Switzerland is a small, very wealthy nation. And as much as they like to moralize to other nations, part of the reason they are so wealthy is because of how they have willingly acted as a tax shelter for shady organizations and even just wealthy individuals trying to avoid paying taxes in their own countries.

People here will hate you for saying that, even though it is true.
"Oh I only made $2.12 an hour in 1975"
Yeah, but that's $11.50 now.
So $8.00 doesn't look so good compared to that.
I'm not saying pay them $15, but it's a sha,e that you can make more not working than working.
And not everyone has what it takes to advance, the ditch diggers and cashiers have to make money too.
I just don't see why people to my right are against an increase in minimum wage but fine with the ceos of these companies making a few thousand times what their employees make.
But this is a rightwing place so I'm sure a dozen people will say let the market decide. yada yada yada.

Eliminate the minimum wage.

definitely agree with this. it would actually give people incentive to work, and not live of the government tit forever.

The CEOs are worth a thousand times more than any one employee at the bottom of the rung.

Why? Only high schoolers and old people make that wage. Not many places pay less than 9-10 bucks an hour. Even burger joints.
CH is very expensive. I lived there in 96-97 and everything and I mean everything was at least 3x's the price of what it is here. For example. When I went you could get a value meal from McD's for $3.30. The same meal was 10 CHF before the exchange rate. Minimum wage shouldn't be around let alone something people get in an uproar about.

definitely agree with this. it would actually give people incentive to work, and not live of the government tit forever.

You're bonkers if you really think minimum wage workers in 1975 had a better life than 2014. Bonkers.

So you'll raise the minimum wage and get more people motivated to find a job. Good for you
Too bad the businesses have to now cut back on employees to keep payroll costs down which means those eager people looking for a job can't find them and there's a whole new crew of unemployed people that just got laid off from the increase

Agree with this bc guess what. Cost of goods go up which is a cute ancillary benefit that will be passed on to consumers. Raising Min wage only hurts us in all actuality

Higher employment rates and inflation, the minimum wage is so beautiful!

You do realize that UE benefits will be increased based on the new minimum wage increase.
People who are lazy will still sit at home collecting checks for doing shite.
