How much freedom does the AD have in regards to contracts with coaches when spending TAF money? Does he have a open checkbook? ( I doubt ) At what point does he have to talk to the real power of LSU athletics ( TAF ) and ask permission how much he can offer or spend on a particular coach?

Perhaps not, but they do put enough money into the program that they get have some input. When you are looking at a self-supporting athletic program, and part of that support comes from a booster foundation such as TAF, they are going to get some input.

TAF has very little say on contracts at all....it is BOS and a few donors and the Chancellor, the TAF Board etc is not involved in day to day AD operations. It's that simple. Joe does not have autonomy either, he has a budget (BOS approves) and a chancellor to answer to. He, Verge, Miriam (women), Nunez, all play roles and make proposals to BOS. In case of football, Les makes proposals to Joe and or goes around him....fact...some get approved but not all. Power is mostly at BOS...and Chancelor etc.

I have no way of knowing, but life experience tells me that those that controls the money controls the house. TAF provides the largest percentage of coaching salaries. So common sense would say that their would be a certain amount of consultation when high dollars are being spent. Is there a point where TAF says no?
