We had a large group in town, and my boss decided to take them to Pascal's Manale. It definitely wasn't my choice, as I'd heard that they'd gone downhill in recent years.

The atmosphere has an old school Italian feel, complete with tons of tacky photos of stars who've previously visited. The first thing I noticed was that the place was dirty and really outdated. There were cracker crumbs all over the floor next to the oyster bar.

Even though we had reservations, there was no having drinks before dinner since the bar is cash only. But have no fear, they provide an ATM in the bar. Tacky, and no thanks.

We were seated 25 minutes after our reservation time. They put us into a private room that was just yuck. Yellow painted walls with tacky photos in plastic frames adorned the walls.

It was evident our waiter didn't want to be there, and didn't want to deal with our large party.

For my appetizer, I had a shrimp and crab remoulade salad. My boyfriend had the fried calamari. They were both pretty good. For my entree I had the BBQ shrimp. I used to love this dish, but recent reports are right on. They just weren't that good. They were cooked correctly, but the butter sauce seemed watered down. It was weird. My boyfriend had paneed veal with some peeled BBQ shrimp. It was just o.k.

My summary:

Atmosphere: D-
Service: C-
Food: C-
Value: C-

I would absolutely never visit Pascal Manale's again. There are far too many other places in New Orleans that serve better BBQ shrimp, and I just can't get past how dirty and outdated it is.

I love the general look and feel of the bar/oyster bar.

The rest of the place, and pretty much everything else about it, is in severe need of a major updating/overhaul.

Even if it was your boss's choice, and your boss was paying?

I love your reviews BTW. You should call them installments of the "dour diner" or "gloomy gourmet" or something like that.

I would go again if it was a work function, and my boss insisted that I come. But him paying for it would not sway me to eat there again.

I have lots of happy reviews. I'm just very honest with the bad experiences as well.

My recently reviews of Coquette and Toast were glowing.

I'm going to Tope La in Hammond tomorrow night. I'm hoping that will be a good one, as it's my first time there. The moms wants to go because they offer lunch prices for dinner on Tuesdays...and no corkage fee when bringing your own wine.

I enjoy them and find them to be spot on. I like that you do reviews of the good and bad.

Why thank you. I'll keep 'em coming as my part time gig until I can find a well paying job as a paid food writer!

Restaurants with good value vs. quality...

Boucherie
Toast
Lola
Mariza
Apolline happy hour

Just to name a few.

I love your reviews. Some here just thinking any negative review is "too mean".

I went to borgne the other day for happy hour and it was great. 5 dollar appetizers and many drink specials. Draft beer is $2 for a huge mug

I certainly don't think your reviews are "too mean" like LL suggests. I must have just missed your favorable reviews. I enjoy reading them, it's just the ones that I have read seem to be pretty dour (in an entertaining way).

Borgne has a great happy hour. The food doesn't wow me, but it's good and a great value.

I'm really big on great happy hours. I had a wonderful experience at Apolline the other day. Review to come!

I know you were just listing a few examples, but I think Peche belongs at the very top of any quality/value list.

I haven't been to Pascal's in a long time. Place is laughable, and I hope someone new jumps in that spot. That area could use another good dining option.

If you can believe this...I've not been to Peche yet. It's such a travesty. I'd heard nothing but stellar things about it. It's definitely at the top of my list, and must happen soon!

I ate at PM about 3 years ago for nostalgic reasons and, as I wrote here, I was sorely disappointed. At the time, the oysters rockefeller were delicious as always and one of the best versions of that dish. Don't know about now.

The bbq shrimp were beautiful shrimp just as they've always been and perfectly cooked-easy to peel, but the sauce was awful. Looked and tasted like pure oil with a few bits of pepper in it. I was shocked. The shrimp were bland. I ate two and left the rest of those beautiful but tasteless shrimp. If there was butter in that dish, I don't know where it was and they were a far cry from the flavor I remembered. Well, there was no flavor and there used to be a lot of it. It was so disappointing.

I don't mind old school Italian decor. It can be quaint and sort of fun in a way, like Vincent's. I don't recall the place being dirty. We were there Easter Monday for lunch and there was no one in the bar and maybe two other tables of people. Such a shame.

ETA: Oh, and I love your reviews.

I'll be murdered for this, but I feel that way about the Royal Reds at Peche.

The Reds themselves are gorgeous, but the sauce is boring. Which is surprising because everything I've had at Peche has been outstanding.

I make the Mr. B's recipe at home, and they're sooooooo rich. I love that about them.

My Mom had them and said the very same thing. She said they weren't worth the trouble. I haven't ordered them.
