5 most penalized teams are 15-2

@dennisdoddcbs: Make that, 5 most penalized P5 teams in the country have a combined 15-2 record. Four are undefeated. 1, BAY; 2, NEB; 3, LSU; 4, OKLA; 5 TCU

LSU is 7-0 when having at least 14 penalties.

I think we would all like to see LSU clean up the penalties. LSU has ranked near the bottom in penalties under Miles (86 out of 128), but that doesn't necessarily impact overall record.
LSU has averaged 6.8 penalties per game from 2005 through 2014. Best year was 2014 (5.4 with 8-5 W-L). 2005 & 2007(NC)were worst: 8.8 & 8.4.
For comparison, Alabama has been one of the least penalized under Saban: 4.6 ppg.
Interestingly, LSU averaged exactly 6.8 over Saban's last 2 years and 7.6 ppg in the 2003 NC year.
Again, we need to clean this up this year. I think we're currently at 9.3 per game. We obviously do not need to kill our drives or extend our opponent's as we get ready for our November push.

Sounds like the competition these teams have played must be pretty bad that they can win despite playing sloppy football.

I would think it depends on what penalties and when. Aggressisiveness causes penalties, so does stupid. One wins games.

Call me a contrarian then bc I'd still rather LSU not give away yards and first downs bc of dumb penalties. Aggressive penalties, like the man making a tackle without a helmet, are one thing. But false starts, illegal formations, etc are not good. Anyone remember that illegal formation against Ark in 2007 which negated a beautiful TD pass in the 4th quarter? Would have won the game if the WR hadn't lined up one foot off the line of scrimmage.

I agree. What is not told in the statistics given are what plays were negated on offense and if these penalties prolonged drives while on defense. By miles estimate we have 27 points and 300 plus yards so far (that was only 2 games). Not to mention the third down penalty drive extenders that we have seen as well. Not only do we have a ton of penalties but the timing has been horrible.

Psychologically, the refs probably don't call marginal or close violations on a team that is getting pounded, they are trying to help get the game over.

Yea I think that is true, the teams that are getting penalized and winning probably aren't having these occur as much on offense for silly things like procedure to have big touch downs called back. I would bet most of the top teams that also get penalized alot are called for things such as def pass int on close plays, block in the back on punt return and a few late hits. All of those are more aggressive type penalties. We need to clean up the penalties that cost us long td plays but keep intensity up on D and special teams. A hustle/hard penalty isn't the end of the world. A wr not properly lining up and taking 6 off the board is much worse than a late hit on a qb.

I agree as well timing as been bad, as i mentioned a late hit on the qb doesn't bother me much. however, it makes it much worse if it occurs on third down.

The national champion is usually among some of the most penalized teams. You have to let the horses run.

We're the only SEC team on that list of five. Any of the last four games of the season could hinge on a penalty or two determing a winner and loser.

Indeed the horses have to run but I suspect those national title contenders/ and champions rack up the penalties on their Defenses and special teams.
The extra block on a punt return to spring it type play where the ref might throw the flag, the late hit on a qb early in the set of downs and game to set tone, DFI because of being physical, and maybe a offsides here or there just being aggressive. I think all of those are perfectly acceptable at non crucial moments in the game for a great team. You gamble and play hard and if the ref calls it then so be it. Those national title teams aren't getting penalties for their inability to line up correctly. I want us to clean up the procedure crap, which we can do. I would like to see the D not get aggressive penalties that extend drives when we have them stopped. Im fine with a late hit or aggressive play in the correct situation.
