How do you know when you have job burn out ?

The field of work I do 3 in 10 patients don't live a year . I see them 3 days a week . I've learned to keep a distance but most of the time you just can't . After over 20 years in this speciality I'm wondering if I should take a different road offered ? Can't wait to hear y'alls insight !

Do you enjoy doing the work still? Losing patients is definitely hard, but I'm sure you realize that you likely had a great impact on them since you seem to care so much.

to me it's when you get fed up with those you work with and you earn a stigma that you don't care anymore.

When you dread getting up to go to work every day, find everything
negative to complain about (and always complain about it) and despise your superiors. Happened to me at my first "career" job. When you are starting to make everyone around (co-workers) you miserable bc of your negativity - it's time to go.

But 7 of 10 do. You have to focus on the positives. Also, it's winter. It gets everybody down. Wait for spring, head to the beach, and reset you brain. If you get back from that, and still hate what you do or feel burned out, then make a decision. Life is too short to be miserable.

I'm here during working hours. What does that tell you?
Errbody burns out in healthcare.
Thanks, Obama.

I think TigerSinceConception said it best. Everyone goes through seasons where they may not be at their happiest or when things get you down; but if you wake up every morning and just sense that because you have to go to work, everything is worse then you have a problem. If you find everything and everyone around at work distasteful, then you have a problem. In those types of instances, you need to get out for your own sanity. You'll find yourself much relieved when it's all said and done.

The medical field is drastically changing and with time restraints comes more stress . It's hard to put a time line on talking to someone thats overwhelmed with a life altering diagnosis . Managers with new productive hour reports have taken away much of the personal time you have to spend .I still very much enjoy helping and believe I have valuable experience gained in over 20 years .I'm contacted weekly by recruiters with job offers in different specialties .Hard to make a change when you've feel confident in your speciality even tho it's beginning to become a grind .

I think you know when it's time to go. If you have problems sleeping and it's constantly on your mind, then you know it is definitely time for a change. No one likes change but sometimes it is necessary.

If you have a job you're probably going to have burn out.
Except for maybe people that work in those places that help deaf people hear (Cochlear implants). I see those videos and I think "those people probably never say 'I hate my job'".

Hell is freezing over . I didn't expect this kind of rational thought ! The beach suggestion sounds pretty enticing . I'm also going to talk to a company that's been recruiting me for awhile to see what they have to offer . Thanks y'all

I hear you about the grind nursing. More specialties than other. I'm a mental health nurse. and I'm experiencing burnout. and I'm only 1/4 the years that you have I feel burnt everyday but I love my job. Is it possible to love and hate your job at the same time.

Mental health and Hospice are the 2 most difficult fields . I refer to both a lot .

If my background was in the medical field, and I knew I could go and find me another job easier than some guy who works for a dime a dozen company, I would leave ASAP if my job did not bring me happiness.
Some people are kind of locked-into a certain job when they have no other viable options. Meaning there are not a lot of jobs out there to begin with and what is out there, you're having to claw tooth and nail with other folks who need jobs.

Buff , I worked in some child psych prn . No way I could continue even with the great pay . Every weekend parents would dump their kids off to have a vacation . Didn't last long .

Stud , I guess it's the starting over thing . I've been with this company for over 20 years .

Yup. Every nurse will reach burnout at some point. I've reached that point a couple times in the past 15 years as a nurse. If you cannot change your job, then you need to find ways to enjoy your time away from your job even more. And anyone that says Obamacare is a great thing clearly does not work in healthcare
