If a student is 18 and has sex with teacher..

While the student is still in school, does that make national news? Is that a big deal?

It's not THAT bullshite when you start getting into the weeds. There is some logic to it.
I think more along the lines of counselors in schools. They can really mess with a student's mind if they had the inclination.
Not every kid is doing well at that age.

If you're 18 you're an adult. It can be against "school policy" as it should should be, but that absolutely should not be against the law.
Period.

What about 17 year olds who are above age of consent yet aren't adults, for which this law also applies?

I think it's only a misdemeanor in La. The age of consent is 17 not 18 anyway.
It's odd how arbitrary the government views age. 17 for sex, 18 for war and cigarettes, 21 for beer, 15 or 16 to drive. 15 yr olds are routinely charged as adults for crimes.

Ya, its all over the place.
I don't really have a problem with the rules regarding educators and positions of trust. It is pretty low on the list of age issues that really bother me.

I feel that if you are old enough to buy cigs and put fat dips in, you should be able to cuddle with your english teacher.

Well that's not what this thread or my posts were about, is it?
18 year old is unanimously an adult in this country. It should never be against the law, if they are of sound mind and consent, for an adult to have sex with an 18 year old.

Ya, that wouldn't cause any conflict of interest in academic pursuits.
All I'm saying is the law has some logical basis as a deterrent, but with most laws, people are going to do what they want to do.

And again, we're starting to get into "grooming" situations when a counselor can take private information and use it against a "kid"
There is some logic to the law, that's all I'm saying.
