Why is the mainstream media not reporting it in as it comes in like they've done previously ? Even before the Internet days I remember poll numbers coming in after lunch and the presidency being called around 9pm or so?

Because votes aren't counted until polls close, and the media can't report on numbers if there are no votes counted...
