For some time now, there has been an unspoken tension in the U.S. national team camp between head coach Jurgen Klinsmann and team captain Michael Bradley over just what role Bradley should be playing for the United States. A tension that appeared to bubble to the surface following Friday’s loss to Mexico.

quote:

The simple solution would seem to be to play Bradley as a pure defensive midfielder. It is the same role Kyle Beckerman has filled for much of the past three years and the same role in which Bradley is currently starring for Toronto FC.

Klinsmann shot that notion down during a round table with national reporters ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica. When asked by Goal USA if he didn’t like Bradley in the number six role (the numerical label for a pure defensive midfielder), Klinsmann made it clear that he believes the role wouldn’t make full use of Bradley’s considerable talents.

quote:

“We have these discussions in every camp, Michael and I, and it’s cool, and I tell Michael, ‘I know you can play the six. I’m not saying you can’t play the six, but I want the Michael that has the ball at his feet and goes vroom, like you beat Germany, and Holland, and all these games,’” Klinsmann said. “The second half against Mexico, we’ll take that. When he wins the ball up the field and he shoots—he could have passed it over to Bobby—but that is a difference. That moment, stepping in there, winning that ball and suddenly we have a big chance to score the second goal.”

quote:

“When Jurgen wanted to use me in a more attacking role it was no issue for me,” Bradley told Goal USA. “I’ve done that and I’m always ready to do whatever I can to help the team win. I’m not someone who's going to sit around and complain, or sit around and feel sorry for myself that maybe in some ways I’m not being used in the perfect way. It’s about the game, it’s about guys who are ready to spill their heart and soul on the field to do everything possible to help the team win and I’ve always done that.

“But again, when I look at myself, when i think about the things I’m good at, the things I can give to a team, I think that my ability to play deep in midfield is something that is very good."

quote:

“Then Michael would play the same role he does in Toronto for us, just being in front of the back line and floating, being a nice passer, which he does undoubtedly well, and I don’t know how many completed passes and stuff like that,” Klinsmann said. “It’s all nice, it’s no doubt, but it doesn’t make a difference for us.”

Yes, Jurgy, having a DLP dictate tempo from the back and organize the defense will make zero difference.

i hope people get off bradley's arse

i don't even think jurgy can clearly define the role of MB. he just wants him to do everything

I mean does it really matter anymore. Bradley has been pretty shitty ever since moving to the MLS. He made the move way to early in his career.

well he moved to toronto and played as a 10 and is a 10 in the MLS and then jrugy made him our 10 and so it got all fricked. i think he's still solid as a DM/DLP and since he's playing that in the MLS i bet we'd see a much improved bradley in that role for the US

having bradley back there also means that a 4-man back line is optimal and jones can do his crazy man B2B shite

Bradley is fine as a 6. He would do fine there for us.

If he is playing in space he's excellent. But we keep pinning him in between the lines and he doesn't have the touch or quick feet to excel there.

Position matters. You don't play De rossi as a 10. You don't play Giovinco as a 6. Bradley at his highest up is an 8 but he's really a 6 and one of the better ones the US has had, if he were played there.

I mean we all know he plays his best in a holding or defensive mid role, and can be a pretty good box to box.

But point still stands his overall form and game has taken a plunge since he went back to MLS.

From a national team stand point we should want our most influential players on the field seeing the best competition possible in practice and games. Especially during their prime years.

I think Bradley would be better playing Right and Left Out.

Would you have turned down the money and playing time for the sake of better competition? Would anyone? Can hardly fault Bradley for that. Yes there are teams he could start for in Europe, but not making what he makes now

Might as well name the article -

People with Brains and Klinsmann at odds about all line-up choices.

Yes it fricking does matter.

You've got a crazy dumb stubborn manager with no tactical capabilities putting a player in a position that does not suit his abilities. Bradley could be much better for us if his dumbfrick manager would play him in a position where he is most likely to be successful.
