:UPDATED: I need OB reassurance (let a buck walk) Updated. Deer was killed

Ok so in-laws have 300 acres they lease to a club. I hunt it occasionally. The club is gone after this year and just family will have it to hunt. It's always been managed by 8pt or better and 13" spread. Not a lot of deer numbers but everyone usually kills a 115-135 inch buck. Neighbors are also on similar management. With the club leaving they have been lenient on their rules and two 7 points weighing 220+ have been killed in a week.
So 20 minutes ago a real nice 8 point steps out. Easily a shooter in antler quality but I wasn't overly impressed with body size. I've always told myself that I should never talk myself into shooting a deer. If the moment you see him you aren't convinced you want to kill him then don't. I watched this buck work 2 scrapes and his rack seemed to get bigger the longer I looked at it. I know any neighbor or hunter here will kill him if they see him but I finally convinced myself that shorting a deer just so someone else doesn't isn't a good reason and I let him slip on into a thicket.
Of course I immediately regretted my decision and likely someone undeserving will kill him but I'm hoping I can build some "trophy buck karma" and it pays off.
This was him in velvet. I had him on camera on my bow stand and said I'd shoot him with a bow but maybe pass with a rifle.
I'm sure many will say it was dumb to pass him but I don't need the meat and he isn't quite "trophy" status and maybe with another year he'll get there.
Update : was told that a good 8 point was killed on the neighbors place this morning. Several guys that run a lot of trail cams, specifically the are I saw this deer, said he was the last "shooter" 8 they had on cam in that are. So, he's dead and I'm a dumbass for letting him walk. Just hope whoever shot him appreciates it

Nice deer. You made the right choice. I would give him 2 years if everyone is one a similar management program.

If you have plenty of meat and you aren't going to put him on the wall it was a no brainer

Don't need the meat, not really impressed, that sounds like the right call.

It would be difficult for me on my lease, But if y'all are killing good deer on this land, I would say that's a good pass.
Good job.

I'd shoot his dick in the dirt, then cut it off and quarter him up. Fricker gonna taste better now than next year, if he makes it.

Good job. You are a gentleman and a scholar . . . . or something like that.

Given ur circumstances knowing gonna be all family next yr I'd a let him walk too. (If under lease again for next several yrs with 8 put 13" rule I'd a shot)

Could there be any worse rule than this or similar? A 5yo 7pt is off limits but a 2yo 8 fair game?. Makes sense

That fricker would have been butcher wrapped before you finished typing this post.
JFWY. He needs time....
If you have a good antler recipe

Most clubs use a case by case on situations like that. It's a good base line to get people to slow down and look at deer.

Good call. I wish my old man would back off the trigger some.
