re: Looking for draftsman or architect recs in BR area for custom home
Posted by Citica8 on 1/16/26 at 7:46 am to Will Cover
I did, as well as a few friends who also custom built in the Ascension area.
You can start out with a Madden plan and get him to tweak it to fit your needs or go completely from scratch.
Spent years before walking through parade of homes seeing what we liked, but you don’t get to look at the plans while you walk through it. We ended up going to our friends houses who built and took their plans while we were walking through the house to get a feel for the measurements, mainly for the living room/kitchen, and back patio, but seeing the difference between an undersized vs oversized laundry room, and master closet was the most helpful.

I would go that route over Weyerhaeuser.
LDWF says peak breeding in West Feliciana can range from December 6th to February 26th, that's breeding, not the chase. quote:
Hunters should remember that breeding periods vary annually and peak breeding times are not necessarily peak buck movement times. Bucks may be more active before or after peak breeding periods, but research has shown that peak buck movement is one to two weeks before peak breeding.
I have bucks chasing does in the day time on December 9th and spotted fawns on Christmas Eve right down the road, 4 miles apart at the same elevation. There is no magic answer, the more you hunt from December 20-January 10 the more success you will have.

Curious if y’all have already seen rut activity where you hunt or not?
Pre rut is the chase, or pursuit.
Peak rut is no bucks seen because they are hunkered down with a doe, like hooker in a hotel room. ETA: Peak rut is the worst time to hunt, and where everyone says "we missed it" or "the ruts over"
Post rut is the refuel stage, where bucks are dumb feeding in day time in the wide open.
We usually see 2 cycles from the week before Christmas, until Jan 4-7th. Then it dies off and picks back up end of January, but not nearly as active.
We are in the dead period, getting ready to get back into prerut. By we, I mean where I hunt, you may be different.
ETA2: In places that have actual seasons, like spring summer fall and winter, not bow or rifle, such as Illinois or Missouri, the rut is very different than along SELA/SWMS

The rut isn't an On/Off switch
There is pre-rut, peak rut, and post-rut, followed by a dead period every month for 2-3 months, bucks will be chasing does well into February or beyond.

Didn't survey the whole woods, but managed to find a few amongst the hundreds of empty caps, picked up a handful of white oak acorns yesterday and they were all split open and mush.
I have cameras on white oaks, plenty of does, and young bucks, nothing mature
Regardless, it doesn't change when does go into heat.

Not sure where you're at but I'm pretty sure Lowes uses ResCom as the installer in the greater Baton Rouge area. I'm in Ascension and went with HMC over ResCom
quote:Already planning on taking mine out because I have a 2 stage that does a good enough job keeping the humidity down. Didn't think there was a second hand market for it.
Some peeps want to rip theirs out over this ??
Pretty sure all the acorns are sour by now, also pretty sure the number of acorns on the ground don't change when a doe goes into heat.
Work kept me out of the woods during the traditional best times this year, so I can't say first hand what our rut was like, but there was a fair amount of daytime buck movement on camera, most were younger bucks that I would let walk. Saw very few mature deer on camera the entire season though.

shite if we slinging used dehumidys in here I'll rip mine out too
I'm pretty sure all of the Generacs are the same, for a while Lowes was selling a Centurion by Generac, which was probably also the same.
quote:Good to know, it was way more work than I was willing to do in the middle of May
It’s BS about having a licensed installer. No licensed installer necessary and I have the full extended warranty. No issues ever.
I had the ATS installed when I built, I was pretty shocked myself when the quotes for the generator install was as much with the transfer switch already installed as it would have been to get the whole thing when we built in '21. I looked into doing it myself, but was told (by other people, not the installers) that Generac required a licensed installer to get the activation code, could be BS, but I went ahead and went through an installer.
They were a good resource, and definitely did some things I would not have been able to do on my own, like wiring a delay to my AC unit. It came with the first year service contract, with mobile link, and a 10 year warranty. They pulled permits through Ascension Parish, which is a money racket. You can also finance through the dealer if that's something you're interested in.

quote:Saw bucks chasing does the 2nd week of December, way earlier than in previous years. 2 years ago a couple of 3yo bucks were still in bachelor groups the week of Christmas.

re: Best insulation for south Louisiana

quote:I'm not sure if it will stick to the foil backing or not, but it will completely negate any benefit you would get from the radiant barrier. Radiant barrier needs an air gap otherwise it transfers the heat of what it is touching. You can grab a piece of foil sitting on a pan right out of the oven without burning yourself, but if you grab the pan with the foil on it you won't be so lucky.
Can open-cell foam be sprayed on top of a radiant barrier, or is this even necessary?
I did a lot of research on insulation and we ended up with blown in fiberglass insulation in the walls and attic. Had rock wool been in the budget we would have gone that route, but were fighting covid price hikes and material availability at the time. Read some nightmare stories about spray foam off gassing and hidden rotting due to the spray foam, so we crossed that off the list.

Had a whole home dehumidifier installed when we built in 2021, along with a 2 stage 5 ton AC.
I don't like it, it uses significantly more energy than I thought it would, and it wasn't installed well, the 2 stage AC keeps the humidity in check. I am going to pull it out and seal it off before the summer comes.

Waterfowl "conservation" and changes in climate patterns have altered migration. Public land is a mess. Hunting clubs are 50% drama seeking Karens in camo.
All of this makes me want to do it less for sure. When I finally get on a stand I am grateful, but all of the bullshite to get to that point almost isn't worth it.

I can see the benefit if you're doing a TON of meat but for the DIY guy doing 1-2 deer a year it's probably not necessary
