Does anyone have any suggestions on Scottish history books to read? I recently traveled there and want to learn more.

My mom is from Edinburgh. Hoping to visit there and Inverness next summer.

Border Fury. It's about the centuries long struggle with England.

It's as dull as the day is long.

Mary Queen of Scots biography by Antonia Fraser. I've read several bios of this Mary and I believe this is the essential one. Mary's story, as well as the story of her complex relationship with her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England is a classic.

I second Fraser as an author who finds the rare balance between scholarship and pleasure.

If you have any interest in Scotland's history before there was a Scotland, I'd recommend Alistair Moffitt's "Before Scotland." Talks about about prehistoric Scotland and the inhabitants that existed there well before the Roman invasion. But that may be too far back for your liking.
