Anyone remember the shittiness of being locked in a server in WoW?

I remember being like 13 and starting out in WoW, playing for a long time, then discovering like 6 months later my friends played it too! I was pumped. I wanted to play with them, only to find out that I was locked into whatever random server my character randomly appeared in when I first started.
If I remember correctly, there wasn't a way to change it either, and I would have to make a new character if I wanted to play with them. I think later on they changed it so you could pay to change your character, but I was already done with WoW by that point.
Anyone else remember that specific hell?

I remember creating characters over and over anyway because the first 20 levels were so much more fun, having new abilities to use and different strategies. I probably started 20 characters and only 1 made it to level 45 before i quit to play dota

Yeah, the cross realm stuff now a days is pretty nice. That's one of the perks of the state of the game currently.

You think that is bad? When FF11 was relevant, you couldn't even pick your server. It was randomly assigned, so if you wanted to play with a friend, they had to spot you a world pass bought with in-game money.

I remember my friends and I being on the same server on FF11 starting out. That must have come later (I didn't play long before returning to EQ)
