"They loved Nintendo...they could have bought a WiiU"
I mean it's really because Japanese and they almost always do things specifically at odds with US consumer practices, but yeah that was funny.

In Japan, everything is tailored. You’ve probably heard Sheena Iyengar’s TED talk, in which she went to a restaurant in Japan and tried to order sugar in her green tea. The people at the cafe said, “One does not put sugar in green tea,” and then, “We don’t have sugar.” But when she ordered coffee instead, it did come with sugar! In Japan, there’s a sense of, “We’re making this thing for you, and this is how we think this thing is better enjoyed.” This is why, in Splatoon, the maps rotate every couple of hours. And the modes change. “I bought this game. Why can’t I just enjoy this game the way I want?” That’s not how we think here. Yes, you did buy the game. But we made this game. And we’re pretty confident about how this game should be enjoyed. If you stick with us, and if you get past your initial resistance, you’re going to have the time of your life with this game. You’re really going to love it.
Sounds rapey.
And the best part...

I acknowledge their viewpoint, but I'll also tell them they're fricking wrong. (Nintendo, that is). Ain't nobody got time for that Far Eastern philosophy shite.

Jives with the stories I have heard about Japan. Even a chain like Burger King which has a motto of "Have it your way" has a philosophy of "You're getting it how we damn well feel like it" when it comes to special orders.

Last week's Giant Beastcast made me IRL laugh out loud about some silly Splatoon 2 map. Salmon Run or something.

Just read your OP before posting.
That is the Splatoon 2 issue i'm trying to reference.

I kind of agree with them in some ways. I hate grouping in Splatoon1. That being said, there were times when I had a crazy awesome experience of symmetry and flow and serendipity because of the randomness of the grouping and lack of communication ability. It was like the team entered group flow without being able to communicate and it was nearly a transcendent experience.
If my team and I could practice and shite, we could do that constantly, making it less precious and powerful.

Surely this can't be real.

I think it's truly a clash of cultures where it's the western "Have it your way" approach vs the Japanese "omakase/ chef's choice" philosophy. It makes perfect sense to them, but where we are used to 24/7 free reign, they prefer the structure of something that's crafted for them.
I think it's stupid.
