For the past 3 years, this other owner and I have a weekly side bet of $100...my team vs his team. We always make this bet after the draft and it runs for the whole season. I’m 7-2 this year. He drafted poorly this year. He calls me up and tells me he’s going to write a check for $500 and that he’s done with the weekly sidebet. He also told the same to the other owners.

Other owners and I have ride out our shite teams in the past.

It is BS. In saying that, let him know there will be NO more side bets this year, next year, or any year from this point moving forward

The only time there should be a buy out offer on the table is when it comes from the person that is ahead in the bet. What does his wife look like?

Hm. I have a few thoughts on this.

1. 'grats on the 7-2

2. This is a sucky situation because I'm guessing that all parties expect this side bet to work out relatively even over the course of the year, or one team to end up ahead by like $300. It seems like in this case he's on track to end up being down over $500 to you (and possibly to others?). That sucks and does take away a bit of the fun of the bet.

3. If he's owing $500+ to multiple people, that's a significant amount of money. Unless y'all are all OT ballers (if so, 'grats again), having to pay out thousands of dollars on top of the league buy in is pretty rough - I know I'd have a tough time explaining that to the Mrs.

I think it comes down to what your relationship with the guy is. If this is a group of buddies who have this league and like to shite talk, etc. than I'd let my buddy slide with the $500 payout so it doesn't ruin the fun of the league. On the other hand, if you guys aren't all close friends and this league is more about the money, I'd try to hold him to the bet and/or kick him out of the league if he doesn't follow through.

If you make a bet after the draft that this will continue for every week of the regular season, this is grade A WELCHING on a bet.

If he's your friend, offer him a fairly generous buyout so he doesn't look like such a scrub and you collect some of the EV he's trying to steal from you. If he's not, I'd probably blast him and tell him not to write checks he can't actually cash.

We’re not that close. Hes more like acquaintance than a friend. Only time we talk is at the draft or a trade proposal.

Frick him. Make him pay and if he refuses, make sure you get your $500 and kick him out of the league.

Had something similar happen last yr w our commish. Makes bet on our game, he loses said bet and never paid. So at the draft party this yr on the list we write on saying we paid for the year, I wrote "commish is paying my buy-in due to side bet last year". A grown arse man pays his debts

I'd probably offer buyout anyway just as a show of good faith. $650-$700 seems fair, you're probably projected to win 2.5-3 of the remaining 4 weeks if his team is bad.

We got 8 weeks left. We don’t have playoffs. Team with most overall points is the champion. I’ll just take the check and learn from it.

This..

If he’s my friend, I’d settle for his $500 offer (a bet’s a bet, regardless of friendship, I’d even offer to let him do something like $250/$250 if he’s not ballin out of control
If he’s not a friend of mine, I’m raising hell.. frick that guy, you can’t back out of a bet because your team didn’t shape up like you thought it would..
