Looking for a good recommendation on the history of The Kingdom. Preferably, about their recent support of fundamentalist ideology but that’s not absolutely neccessary if it’s a good recommendation.

TIA

I've read The Bin Ladens by Steve Coll

It's not so much about the fundamentalism or history of the Kingdom but touches on both topics frequently when following the rise of the Bin Laden family. It's a very well written book though, so I would recommend it. His book Ghost Wars is excellent too.

I've also read both of those books. They are very good.

Anyone looking for a thorough account of the rise of al-Quada and how we ended up in bed with Pakistan, Ghost Wars is the book for you.

Somewhat broader than your desired scope, but Albert Hourani's (Lebanese writer) A History of the Arab Peoples is pretty good.

It's dated now, but almost a must read for broader context on the region, particularly for a non-Arab (IMHO).

There were two sources that we read in a Middle Easten History course some 30 years ago.

Middle Eastern Women Speak - it is an oral history of sorts - the author was Warnock. The other was a Concise History of the Middle East - author Goldschmidt.

I still have both volumes.

I’m looking for the more modern history describing Saudi Arabia’s support for fundamentalist Islam (whabis) to appease the clerics so that they can stay in control of the country
