#Eagles nuggets ahead of Thursday night's opener:

- Nick Foles targeted Zach Ertz more than any other pass catcher in '17-18 (49)

- Nelson Agholor was second (40)

- No Eagles RB exceeded 13 receptions all last year

- Jay Ajayi averaged 15.7 touches over Philly's final 6 games

Matt Breida took the 1st running back rep at #49ers practice on Monday. Alfred Morris took the 2nd. Morris afterwards admitted he doesn't know the full playbook yet. Sounds like Breida starts Week 1.

Some Plus, Minus CB-WR Matchups for Week 1:

TOP MATCHUPS

Adam Thielen vs. K'Waun Williams
The 5'9" Williams was a regular feature in this column last year, as only four players gave up more than his 46 receptions out of the slot. And Thielen has both a size and technique advantage here. The question is if he'll continue to be the primary slot receiver for the Vikings under OC John DeFilippo, as he was under Pat Shurmur. For my money, I don't see why "Flip" would change what worked. This could be a big game for Thielen with new QB Kirk Cousins.

John Brown vs. Vontae Davis
This is going to be a very intriguing chess match -- the Bills have one of the NFL's best young corners in Tre'Davious White, while HC Sean McDermott doesn't typically like to travel his CBs. If that's the case this week, I absolutely guarantee Ravens OC Marty Mornhinweg will want to try to get "Smokey," who had a great preseason, matched up on Davis, who got torched during the preseason, including twice by Bengals deep threat John Ross (Ross dropped one, and scored on the other). If Brown gets single coverage from Davis, count on Joe Flacco to look his way. With Brown's skill set, all he needs is one play to pay off using him.

Jamison Crowder vs. Budda Baker
The Cardinals moved on from Tyrann Mathieu this off-season and instead have been using packages during the preseason with 2017 2nd-round safety Budda Baker playing the slot – it’s a variation on the “big nickel” packages that have become prevalent around the NFL in recent years. While Baker showcased excellent agility in the NFL Combine in 2017 relative to his position, it pales a bit more when compared strictly to CBs, and Crowder is one of the NFL’s true masters of route running out of the slot. With Patrick Peterson likely occupied on the perimeter with Paul Richardson and occasionally Josh Doctson, this could be a good 6-7 catch week for Washington’s most reliable short-area WR with new QB Alex Smith.

Mike Williams vs. Chiefs CBs
If you’re looking for a lower-end play who was starting to get some late-August draft hype, consider Williams against Kansas City too. The big reason is size. At 6’3” and 220, Williams toes the line between wide receiver and tight end. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have no corners on their roster listed at taller than 6’0” – and those two CBs are 6th-round rookie Tremon Smith and rookie UDFA Charvarius Ward. The starters, Kendall Fuller and Steven Nelson, are both closer to 5’10”. Williams’ rookie campaign was plagued by injuries, but this is a potentially good week to get him going with QB Philip Rivers.

Kelvin Benjamin vs. Ravens CBs
Laugh if you want, but the Bills are going to have to throw the ball to somebody this season. QB Nathan Peterman was competent during the preseason, and he’s getting the nod over rookie Josh Allen for the time being. Meanwhile, Ravens top CB Jimmy Smith – who was 4th-best in the NFL in opposing QB rating last season, according to ProFootballFocus – is serving a four-game suspension. Baltimore has two very good options to “fall back” on in vet Brandon Carr (15th on that list) and second-year stud Marlon Humphrey (5th on the list), but neither has the shutdown ability of Smith (at least not yet). It’s by no means a pristine matchup, but the Ravens will have a little less depth than they’d like in the secondary, and Benjamin is a good bet to be peppered with targets.

Michael Gallup and Allen Hurns vs. Panthers CBs
Which Cowboy receiver would you possibly want to take a shot with here? It’s a lower-end play for sure, but Gallup had a good preseason, and Hurns is the “certified veteran” of the group, which obviously goes a long way with a Jason Garrett coached team. Meanwhile, the Panthers are going to be featuring two rookies in their opening day secondary – 2nd-rounder Donte Jackson and 3rd-rounder Rashaan Gaulden. The Panthers know the secondary is a weak area… will the Cowboys be able to take advantage of it?

MINUS MATCHUPS:

Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson vs. Rams CBs
Both the Raiders and Rams had “splashy” off-seasons… but for very different reasons. The Rams are gearing up for a Super Bowl run while rookie QB Jared Goff is on a cheap deal, and that included reinforcing their defense with some big-name acquisitions. That includes CBs Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib, primed to become one of the NFL’s best duos this season. We have no idea what the Raiders will look like under Jon Gruden schematically, as we barely got a glimpse of their first-team offense during the preseason, though Gruden did tell reporters this off-season that Cooper would be the “main vein” of his offense. What we do know is that Cooper torched Peters’ Chiefs for 11/210/2 in Week 7 last year… but in three other games against Peters and Talib, he totaled 3 catches for 18 yards on 10 targets. It’s a brutal Week 1 matchup for the reshuffled Raiders to get off on the right foot.

Mike Evans vs. Marshon Lattimore
This is a horrendous matchup for Evans, who likely will draw the shadow coverage of one of the league's best young corners. In two games with the Saints last year, Evans caught 6 passes for 68 yards... on 19 targets. He saw time with Ryan Fitzpatrick in one of those games, catching 1 pass for 13 yards on 6 targets, with both of his targets from Fitz falling incomplete.

(Godwin game week 1? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm)

Odell Beckham vs. Jalen Ramsey and AJ Bouye
Beckham recently became the NFL’s highest-paid WR, a fact that I don’t expect to be lost on the NFL’s top CB duo, especially the outspoken Ramsey. Meanwhile, according to ProFootballFocus, Bouye allowed an NFL-low 31.6 QB rating when targeted a season ago (Ramsey was “only” 10th-lowest at 63.9). Obviously, I’m not suggesting you bench OBJ outright,

(Nobody benching OBJ but might have to temper expetations)

Paul Richardson vs. Patrick Peterson
We thought Richardson was undervalued in drafts all summer, but that doesn’t mean he should be finding his way into your Week 1 lineups. Washington paid him big bucks to be their top outside WR for Alex Smith (ProFootballFocus’ top-rated deep passer a season ago), but that will likely draw the attention of Peterson in this Week 1 tilt. In his career, Richardson has played seven games against the Cardinals, more than any other opponent. He’s caught more than 1 pass in just two of those seven games, and totaled 1 reception in two games last season. Now that he’s Washington’s clear top outside WR, barring a big Josh Doctson breakout, the coverage I’m projecting he’ll draw from Peterson makes him a full Week 1 fade.

Robby Anderson vs. Darius Slay
This isn’t a matchup I’d like to see Week 1 if I drafted Anderson to be my WR3 or FLEX. Not only is he playing with Sam Darnold, a talented rookie who is nonetheless going to be the youngest QB to ever start a season opener, but he’s going up against Slay, perhaps the NFL’s most underrated corner and one who is not shy to shadow coverage. ProFootballFocus’ #6 CB in lowest opposing passer rating in 2017 (55.6) is someone I’m avoiding this week. I’ll prefer to stick Anderson on my bench and wait for a better matchup.

Corey Davis vs. Xavien Howard
Howard is a big, physical corner who is underrated on an overall bad Miami team. But he shut down Brandin Cooks in a national TV game last year, and reportedly had a phenomenal camp. We'll see if he follows Davis around. This will be a real measuring-stick matchup for how I view both players this season.

(Xavier Howard is fuggin good)

PLUS TE PLAYS

Ricky Seals-Jones vs. Redskins
Washington gave up the 4th-most receiving yards to TEs a season ago. Both of their starting safeties – Montae Nicholson and DJ Swearinger – are holdovers from a season ago. The athletic RSJ, a former college WR, has reportedly had a nice camp, and we know how much QB Sam Bradford likes to sling it to his TEs in the short area (Kyle Rudolph had 83 catches and 7 TD in Bradford’s “full” starting season in Minnesota in 2016).

Delanie Walker vs. Dolphins
OK, so there’s nothing “sneaky” about Walker, but he’s going up against a defense that gave up more points to the TE position than any team in the league last year. Miami is counting on rookies DB Minkah Fitzpatrick (1st-round pick) and LB Jerome Baker (3rd-round pick) to help shore up the back end against the pass, but it may take a little bit of time for everything to jell. Walker is going to be a very, very popular DFS play in Week 1.

Eric Ebron and Jack Doyle vs. Bengals
In this game against the Bengals' nasty front (especially in subpackages), I think Andrew Luck will be trying to get rid of the ball quickly in his first game back from a nasty shoulder injury. The beneficiaries will be the TEs, Ebron and Doyle. The Bengals do have the exploitable LB Preston Brown, who will play in their subpackages, and that's a matchup Luck will look to take advantage of. The question, of course is this, and it's one we've been asking all off-season -- which of these two players will benefit more?
