Short story, my 13-year-old son plays in a very competitive soccer league in Texas. This past weekend we were playing a team from Austin and we were up 1-0. Our keeper asks the ref how much time is left, to which she replies “less than a minute”.

From that point on, our kids were launching any ball they got (from the field of play) WAY Off the field every chance they got to help run out the clock. The referee called a fricking time out to tell our coach that she will issue a yellow card to any kid that kept doing that for “delay of game.”

Is this a new rule or was this ref a total idiot? Are we just supposed to play a possession game for the next minute plus injury time? Our coach came absolutely unglued as you might suspect.

that brings back a lot of great memories of playing on wide open fields in north texas

those games where you’d be up 1 or 2 nil and the wind was blowing 20 mph and you’d just launch a ball 3 fields over

Considering the team we were playing went to Colorado for the national championship last year, yes

While I think this is funny, it’s one thing to do this in a stadium where there is one field surrounded by bleachers where other balls can be thrown in quickly.

I have no clue what the setup is, but I can only assume a 13-year-old’s game doesn’t have ballboys and stadium seating. Kids purposefully launching the ball like 3-4 fields over would piss me the hell off as a ref too.

"Delaying the game" is the wrong wording to use.

Under the laws it would fall under "Unsporting behavior" which you can be carded for.

It's one thing to launch the ball upfield. It's another to kick it sideways off the field 200 yards away when your were 3yds from the sideline.

Please don’t say it was for President’s Cup. There’s about nine national titles now.

Regardless, it sounds like your kids play at a high level. And yes, if their coach was telling them to do that at 13 you may want to find a coach with development as their best interest.

so much wrong with this...

this is one of those things that shouldn't be allowed at a youth level. heavy emphasis needs to be on sportsmanship, with "competition" being secondary.

not much hope for your son or his teammates it seems. coach is reinforcing the behavior and dad is online whining about it.

No and no.

I have no doubt. Coaches can be pretty stupid in regards to laws of the game.

But did they get their participation trophy?

Play possession, don’t delay the game unneededly so. The opposing team should have had extra balls ready.

Soccer league? United Soccer Clubs (USC)?

I’m amazed at some of the teams and results...

You could probably write it up a few ways. Could card him for delaying the restart of play (by purposefully kicking the ball far out of bounds) or for importing behavior for showing a lack of respect for the game.

Neither.

That's one way you could do it.

Looks like a cool group of leagues. We don’t have shite over here. There’ll always be a what-if had my son grown up in a place to try out for ultra-competitive teams...but it is what it is. He excelled against the competition he played, he can use that confidence going forward.

He’s excited about playing all the school sports he can.

If the other team wants to make sure they can throw in fast, have balls ready. Kicking a dead ball is a card. I can see how the ref would consider launching balls out the same as that.
