If you purchased on steam, you can keep using RL through steam.

I wonder if they will pull one of those things like Ubisoft does where you still have to go through their launcher to play it. That's effectively removing it for me.

It doesn't sound like it. That's what makes this purchase interesting since the games on its last leg. I assume they're banking on trying to grow the competitive scene more?

Competitive scene is still huge, they are getting more viewers now than they ever did for the RLCS. In game player numbers skyrocket when the competitive scene is going on as well.
I find it's a pretty enjoyable game to watch the pros play.

Nothing shady about this. Anyone who wanted Rocket League on Steam likely has it by now. Game is not new anymore. I only wonder if people will still be able to buy new DLC cars or not?
