Look, I'll out flag-wave the best of you, and I work closely with veterans groups, but...

Recieved the Congressional Medal of Honor.

for....? Being a high-ranking old guy on Omaha? I hope it's something far more than that!

If you visit the Battleship Alabama in Mobile, there is a wall of Alabama CMoH earners. One young man was in a B-17 that had a phosphorous bomb start to ignite and threatened to explode the entire plane. HE PICKED UP THE BOMB AND WALKED OFF THE PLANE... I can only imagine the pain and agony as his skin was melting in his effort to save his buddies. My wife and kids couldn't understand why I suddenly burst out crying in the museum.

THAT is a CMoH recipient. If Roosevelt got it for being high-ranking and old, I'll be disappointed. Disgusted in fact.

Norman Cota the ADC of the 29th was also on Omaha beach that day, he was played by Robert Mitchum in the movie the Longest Day, not to diminish TRJr. but Cota seems to have been more effective on the Beach than TRJr.

I suspect most if not all ADC's went in with the troops, the big deal about TRJr is they didn't want him to go because of age and infirmity where he was suppose to be.

Cota came in the second wave. TRjr was the first guy off the boat, basically reorganized the whole initial assualt when the first wave drifted South a mile from their targeted landing zones, kept the assault from floundering into confusion. Did it all under constant fire, despite being 56, needing a cane to walk due to arthritis, and having a heart condition ( which he died from like a month later). This after having already fought and having been gassed and wounded in ww1 and winning the distinguished service cross in that war.

I’ve met a few Medal of Honor winners in my day. Actually a few from WWII and one from Vietnam.

I had a MSM pinned on me by Jumping Jim Gavin at Bragg in 83.

I’ve known, and fought with, a lot of heroes whose names will never be recognized by the masses.

Teddy Jr (we use the name loosely in my family because my first wife’s uncle was Uncle Teddy, (junior) whose Dad, my first wife’s grandfather, designed the Thompson sub machine gun. Purdue engineer at the time. I’ve shot that commemorative #3 gun presented by Colonel Thompson strictly because I was a former NCO of the Year of the 82nd .... not because I was a family member.) Teddy Junior (Roosevelt) had something to prove. That may fly over most’s heads,

Conversely John McCain was a cock sucker. Ask me why I know that.

35 years ago today I jumped into the 40th anniversary ceremony in France as part of a hand picked few members of the 4/325th Airborne Combat Team stationed in Vicenza Italy at the time .... shook hands with Ronnie Reagan, saluted Maggie Thatcher up close and personal. Got pictures to prove it.

Time flies, life goes by fast.

This country has changed. I hope we survive.

Before melting down and acting all offended why not do a simple search as the information is not difficult to find.

Nah, easier to go on an uninformed rant.

I love his story.

I think it’s also a good example of the decay in our leadership. What Roosevelt did, serving, exposing himself to danger. It was expected, and he did his duty. But that would not happen today, because we just don’t have men of that caliber leading the country.

FWIW both Patton and Bradley, neither of whom liked Ted Roosevelt personally, considered him the bravest man they had ever known. His division commander believed he saved the landing on Utah Beach by his decisive action under direct enemy fire. At the time of his death, he had been approved for promotion to Major General and was to have been given command of the 90th Division. He was no political hack in uniform.

If you want to talk about undeserving MoH recipients, I give you Douglas MacArthur.

Mac Arthur..quite a checkered career. I'll give him credit for one thing he was a great military governor.

He did a good job running The Philippines before and Japan after the war.

But as a general..he effed up in the Philippines badly early in the war and while going back later might have been the right thing to do politically, it sucked militarily.

Then in Korea he turns victory into nearly total defeat with his arrogance concerning the Chinese, and it costs him his career.

Was he any more important than the 1000s of others that went ashore? Can't mention everyone.

Quick thinking and being forward with the troops allowed Teddy Jr. to save a lot of lives at Utah (which was still no piece of cake, but not Omaha).

There was nothing that could be done at Omaha - that was just the mission those cats drew.

God bless them.

Buried next to his brother Quinton, who killed in WWI. At the Normandy cemetery.
