Hey guys like most here I play a lot of municipal courses and therefore often find myself lying somewhere from 40-120 yards from the green which for me is going to be a wedge. I really struggle with this part of my game, especially the 40-80 yard distance.

I go to the driving range and practice this a lot but it’s hard to really recreate the shots, since there is so much feel involved it doesn’t really help to hit a 60 yard shot 20 times like it would hitting a full 8 iron, since the distances are so exact when approaching, I might have practiced 60 yds but the shot I need is 55 yds and missing it deep kills me, etc...

Anyone got a good drill, game, tip to work on this extremely important part of most amateurs game?

I feel like it’s what keeps my scores in the 80’s instead of the 70’s

TIA

Other than go to a chipping green that has 50-100 yards to work with, Ive done two things. The ladder drill, where you try to hit the next ball just a little further than the last, then at some point start work g it back.

My short game was probably at its best inside of 100 when I was going to my local park and hitting balls to sticks. I'd step stuff off and then hit a bag and go pick them up. Just repetition.

Starting with your PW, record distances for different takeaways and follow throughs. Think of hands on a clockface (8 to 4, 9 to 3, 10 to 2). Once you have a good feel for your PW, repeat the same for your next wedge and so on.

I’ve done that and I agree it helps, but I find in round that can be hard to replicate and overall is just a bandaid for lack of feel

I normally do some version of this. I’ll shoot the distance to objects or to the pins if possible and use the as reference.

Consider having 2 swings for each wedge.

3/4 and 1/2.

So if you have 4 wedges that is 8 distances you can dial in.

Don’t hit 10 balls in a row at each distance. Vary one or two shots in increments because on the course you don’t get practice shots to warm up.

from 40-80 Im about 99% using lob wedge. I use the clock to judge my distances. When my club goes back to straight up in the air pointing at sky, its going 65 yards. I judge everything off of that. Like the guy above said, when you practice vary your distances each swing. Do not hit the same distance twice in a row.

Pretty much.

For me a 56* is
Full-100 yards
3/4-80
1/2 60

60*
Full 85 yards
3/4 60
1/2 40
