So I’m new to basketball recruiting (not basketball) and I’m curious about our upcoming recruits. I’m not sure how the amount of scholarships you can sign is determined either. I’ve looked at film of the top two guards we have committed and I’m very intrigued. They both look like real players with one (Thomas looking like a stud).

It seems will wade can recruit guards just fine but how are these big boys we’re recruiting looking? In order to run wades defense we need a small ball center AND a traditional rim protector big. We like to press but we also like to play a half court game for stretches. Do we have a big man coming in I can get hyped on? Just imagine if this years team could slide everyone down a position.. I think that would do wonders for our team

Also has anyone see the oak hill guy I think his name is Thomas interviewed??? He could be a totally different beast on the court personality wise but he is a super soft spoken shy guy from the interviews I saw. He couldn’t stop fidgeting and playing with his hands and looking down. Nothing wrong with that I just don’t think he will he the guy trying to pump up the crowd. Hopefully emmitt stays so he can be our energizer bunny

Cam Thomas has been called the best pure scorer in the entire 2020 class. Jalen Cook is a great athlete with a ton of potential. Josh Leblanc is said to be the best defender at LSU and will be eligible next season(hopefully at start of season). Bradley Ezewiro is more of a project but is 6'8 and may grow even larger.

Then you have the guys LSU lead for. Mwani Wilkinson(ETA for BOOM!) is a top 100 player and is underrated at that. Frank Anselem a 6'10 C from the 2021 class who is likely to reclassify and LSU leads for him. He will almost for sure get bigger and will be that big man we need. Anselem is a top 50 national recruit. Shareef O'neal is 6'9 and was nearly a 5* coming out of high school. He had heart surgery and is supposedly 100% now. Hopefully O'neal chooses LSU.
The future of LSU basketball looks great.

If you mean Leblanc, he’s a transfer from Georgetown. He played high school ball at Madison Prep in Baton Rouge.

There is only one strict limit for basketball scholarships. You can have no more than 13 scholarship players at a time. Redshirts count towards the 13.

There used to be the 5/8 rule where you couldn’t sign more than 5 guys a year or 8 in two years. That’s been gone for at least a decade, I think.

Now, in theory, if every single player on your team is a senior or goes pro, you can sign 13 guys in a year.

LSU will have at least 4 new guys next year (Cook, Thomas, Ezewiro, LeBlanc) and maybe two more (O’Neal and Wilkerson). Anselem would make it 7 newcomers if he reclassified. I guess we will learn about that in June.

However O’Neal would be out all season due to transfer rules. LeBlanc will likely start playing at the end of the first semester.

Eta: since I came home from work and wrote these posts, I see Wilkerson has committed to LSU today.

He has interest but it’s very tough to do.

Marcus Spears lasted a few practices. Michael Clayton didn’t even go that far. Ronald Martin played 1 game, I think.

I am not expecting much, if anything, from Toles on the basketball court.

Are you sure?

If that’s the case why would he quit the team at UCLA now and not after the season?

I’m not educated on the transfer rules but my understanding particularly in basketball why guys do this is to be eligible at the mid point

okay so after doing research you say at available at the beginning of the season.. If we don't get him by then does he miss the year or he can come in midseason? Is this all due to transferring or did he get in trouble

What do you mean tough. I obviously can't even do 1 so I get what you mean but is it like a skill issue or conditioning? Mo hampton seems to be killing it

His timing is really tricky. He played a basketball game on January 15 and played in 13 games.

It’s really close but I believe that would put him over the numbers to retain eligibility to start paying in the second semester next year.

It’s close enough they may try to get him eligible, and I don’t remember the rules 100 percent but I thought you could only play in 30 percent of regular season games and be eligible for the following spring.

As for why he transferred if that was the case, maybe he got tired of playing, wanted to take some time off, or just knew UCLA wasn’t the places for him. It isn’t always stone cold logic.

He is close enough to the thresholds that they may make a case though.

I believe he will be eligible by mid season as things stand now. I'm sure they will pursue a waiver to try to get him immediately eligible though.

Spears said it was conditioning. He had gotten too large for football and his cardio was shot for basketball.

The difference won’t be as exaggerated for defensive backs, but Ronald Martin was a great high school player and didn’t play much at all. It seems very challenging to come in after the football season in the middle of January while the team has been practicing for three months and is in the meat of their schedule, player bonds have been formed during games, etc.

We’ve had way more positive outcomes with baseball players.

I see no way Shareef would ever be eligible in the fall. He played in January games for UCLA.

Hmmm. Will be interesting to see what happens. I think we will have a legit case for Leblanc to be immediately eligible and it’s going to be hard PR battle for the ncaa to turn down shaqs son from a mid term eligibility given his name and heart surgery etc

Man this looking a lot better then I had anticipated (based on no data). Thanks to all for filling me in and explaining the limit. I noticed most are expecting us to sign 5-7. I know we lose skylar, and marlon, but who else is expected to leave. I guess emmitt, javonte, and watford all have a case and i'd respect their decision but unless they wanna play a little overseas ball (I think that would be super cool) they gotta stay

I just don’t see how LeBlanc gets immediate eligibility but that’s based on my opinion and not any facts. It’s not like he has a pure exoneration. The restraining order still stands although it seems like the criminal charges have been dropped. Regardless he should be eligible in the second semester.

As for O’Neal, I could be using out of date on the rules on the basketball threshold. In the past, I remember Duke players intentionally not entering games in December to not go over a certain number, but this was 7-8 years ago, and the NCAA has been more flexible about football redshirts recently. If they up the threshold past 30 percent, O’Neal could be in.

As it stands he played 13 games this year.

Are we not allowed to talk about what happened to Leblanc? I know Chicken doesn't like rumors being spread on the boards but he went to georgetown and has to sit because of transfer or because legality?

Leblanc and another Hoya are mixed up in a he said she said that the only people who will ever know for sure what happened were those in the room. The criminal charges were dropped. Given that they were dropped the argument is that he unjustly lost a year of eligibility
