I read it a few months back. Ordinarily not the type of book I'd go for but I CONSTANTLY kept hearing how great it was, over and over again. so finally I was just like 'ok, let's see what all the fuss is about'. It started a small bit slow as its introducing the world and characters but as it got on I found myself getting lost and reading for a while without even realizing it. It's not a book with constant action and big mega moments, but it kept me engaged to where I just had to keep going. I certainly have no regrets reading it.

That's the mark of a great book.

Like most on this board I suppose, I saw the film version long before reading the novel so it was a little suprising upon realizing that the film is only an adaptation of about the last 100 of the novel’s 700 plus pages.

The film is, however, very faithful to those last 100 pages and a very fine movie in its own right, though it cuts out one of the novel’s best characters – the Cantonese housekeeper, Lee.

I've never seen the movie but I can't even wrap my head around having a movie and Lee not be in it. He is a major, major part of the story

I was just about to say the same thing.

180 pages left and it does have some fast spots, but also some dull spots that is just describing the landscape and introducing characters, etc.
