Broke 90 today for the first time

Shot an 86 at my home course in 15-25 mph winds.
Did a few things differently today than usual that pretty much amount to playing the smart shot. On my 200-230 yard approach shots I played a 6 iron rather than a fairway wood. Been missing right with the wood and getting into all sorts of trouble and the irons have been pure lately. Played the safe shot instead of trying to attack the green. This left me with some easy wedge shots from good lies.
To follow up with that, I was making really good contact with chips and short pitches- leaving myself makable 1 putts from off the green.
Last but not least, my putter was on the money today. Only had 1 three putt and sank several 10-20 footers that are typical two putts for me. This made up for my inconsistency off the tee, but it still sucks knowing I left strokes on the table. No birdies today, but no really bad blowups either- which I attribute to smarter shot selection, playing each shot to assure to the best of my ability that it ends up in a safe spot.
Also played a new ball for the first time today. Srixon Z star. Don’t know if I just swung it better today or what but easily my favorite ball to date and I’ve hit titleist, snells, callways, and Bridgestones. Felt great off the club face and I really liked it with my wedges and putter.
Here’s to breaking 80 one day

Par 5s on the the 200-230. I usually get big eyes and pull out a wood and slice it into another fairway. 7 to wedges on the par 4 approaches. My mid irons have gone from completely nonexistent never pull out of the bag to serviceable. Lot of range time with that 6 iron lately

Sounds like you’re starting to understand how to manage your game. That’s a big step towards improvement.

Congrats. You'll always feel like you left something out there.
Tom Coyne once said "I had learned what 68 felt like (it felt like it should have been 67)." That quote sums golf up pretty nicely for me.
The 90 barrier is a fun one to break.

those balls are money in the wind. I’ve switched to the XV’s as I have a high ball flight. They just penetrate through the wind

Those balls balloon on me so bad they will go backwards when I hit an iron into the wind. I had to stop playing them

This one stings because it should’ve been me on Sunday. Never broken 90 on my home course. Shot 39 on the front (previous record 42) with a nice birdie on 9 and all the momentum going to the back.
Gave several strokes going on the back with some missed short putts and greens I should’ve hit. Got to 17 and made a 9 on an easy par 4. Needed par on 18 to finish with 89 and made a double. Ended up with 52 on the back and a complete choke job.
Still salty about it two days later. Sucks that I can’t go for it again until next weekend!!

Nice job man!
Don't be discouraged if you shoot 90+ on your next round out. It's a game of highs and lows

Great round OP! Congrats. Managing the round and not going for everything can definitely help break 90.
This is brutal lol. Would've taken me a while to recover from that
