Hard drive to watch movies on TV?

Probably a dumb, or at least a noob, question:
I still buy blu ray/dvds for my kids movies, and usually they come up with a digital copy. I download it and it goes to my iTunes and kids can watch on computer. I'd like to have the option to put them all on a hard drive that I can plug into a TV and watch from there (without having to deal with streaming/internet availability). is there something out there that can hold 20 or so movies that I can just leave attached to TV so they can watch from there?

Just make sure it's an SSD (Solid State Drive). Continuous play (movies) will shorten the useful life of a conventional HD. SSD's should also render a smoother playback (faster read speeds).

Need to check what file system the TV can use, some only use Fat32 which will not play files larger than 4GB.

Yeaahhh that’s not even remotely true. That would also be an extremely expensive way of doing it.
The HDD isn’t rendering the playback of the video file, it’s just supplying the file. The TV/Device is.

I'm pretty sure those iTunes movies have DRM on them, digital copy or not. So you can't just move the files to a hard drive and plug them into a tv and expect them to play. Easiest thing to do is buy an Apple TV and stream them locally off the computer hard drive.

I think he was insinuating that the read speed of the HDD isn't fast enough to ensure smooth playback. To Tigerpawl, the read speed of any HDD is plenty fast enough. Hell, my Plex server HDD runs through USB 2.0 (!) and is able to serve multiple 1080P streams at once.

I routinely direct stream 4k remux locally while 2 or 3 friends are playing 1080p conversions remotely and never so much as a hiccup.
This is on a 10 year old alienware.
To be fair the external drives are usb3.

Can you attach a usb drive directly to either the TV or the Blu Ray drive?
Just get a 256 gb thumb drive. It'll hold plenty of movies.
