Two weeks in Hilton Head, three courses, fun times

I just returned from a great two-week trip to Hilton Head. I just recently got back into golf after a 10-year hiatus, and my wife reluctantly 'allowed' me to hit up three courses.
I played Harbor Town Links and the RTJ and Fazio courses at Palmetto Dunes. If that didn't get me back into it, nothing will. I feel a little obsessed with it now and am trying to get my scores back down to where they were a decade ago.
I hit in the high 90s at both Harbor Town and the RTJ course, and then I was even more inconsistent at the Fazio course and hit a 105. However, I had a blast and am excited to get better.
Harbor Town was incredible. The fore caddie was helpful and added an extra element. The bunkers were wild.
RTJ was absolutely gorgeous. The holes along the shore were beautiful.
I didn't like the Fazio course as much as the other two, but still a wonderful course.
Anyone ever play in Hilton Head? If so, what do you think?

Played Harbor Town years ago the last day before they closed it for the Tour event. They had already installed some bleachers around the course. A guy was sitting in them at the 18th green. Clapped for our group as we finished. Everyone gave a tip of the cap.
I must say that course has the best set of par 3’s I’ve ever played on a single course.

Went to play Harbor Town years ago. We show up and its just pouring rain. They told us to just hangout and come back later. When we came back they just let us go out and play for free and use our tee time for the next day. It was pretty sloppy but we had fun. Showed up the next morning and you would never know it had rained. Course was in perfect condition and probably the most fun round of golf of my life.

Did my Honeymoon in Hilton Head around New Years 96. The lighthouse was off the balcony of my Condo. At the time, the green fee was $160. I was a grocery store asst manager making $20,000/yr. The notion of paying $160 for a round of golf was insane to me.
I played the RTJ course and President Clinton was a few holes in front of me. He was there for something called “The Rennasaince”... it was a big gathering of political types and CEO’s, sports figures and Hollywood types.
The couple they paired my wife and I with had an extra ticket to this New Years gala and invited my wife and I to join them. Lynn Swann was there, I was seated next to Ron Silver at a table. Sure enough, just before mid night, the secret service came in and cased the joint. Bill Clinton walked in and glad handed everybody and did the countdown with us. Pretty surreal experience.
I know, I know...

Playing Harbor town end of this month. How tight is is? Any recommendations? Thanks

It’s a shot maker’s course. It is tight in some places, but if you’re in the right spots you will be ok. It is above anything else fair. Hit good shots & you’re fine. Hit garbage shots & you’ll get to see a lot of bungalows

True.
If you miss the fairway, you'll land it in a sandy wasteland on many holes.
Lots of beautiful, deep (and scary) bunkers surround some of the tiniest greens. But while the greens are tiny, they don't have much break to them. Overall, a challenging but fair course.
The clubhouse is amazing. The approach on 18 with the lighthouse in view and the ocean on the left is one of the best ways to conclude a round.. I loved the par-3 17... gorgeous hole.
On the par-4 9, I hit a nice drive in the fairway and then hit my approach shot perfectly, aimed right at the pin, perfect distance - or so I thought. It clipped a tiny, little limb about 20 yards in front of the green and fell straight down. I was dumbfounded... didn't even see it there. Then shanked my chip to the right, lol. Went from seeing birdie to double bogie in a matter of minutes, lol.
Made up for it on 10. I cleared the huge, beautiful live oak to land on the green in 2. But, of course, missed my birdie putt and ended with a par.
Can't wait to play this one again.

My annual buddies golf trip was based at Palmetto Dunes for many years. We'd play all 3 courses (RTJ, Fazio and the Hills course). I also enjoyed the Hampton Hall Club just off island, but I think it's now a private facility.
I've played Harbour Town a dozen times having grown up in the area. The most fun day to play it is the Monday right after the tournament. They leave the tees and hole locations from Sunday and it's in tournament condition. Can be just brutal.

I have played RTJ and Arthur Hills at Palmetto and enjoyed them both. Love to play when we go to the Disney DVC resort across the street.

I hated #9. Short par 4’s like that should be banned from golf courses world wide. Just lay up & hit a wedge in. Way too easy.
I agree about 17. Headed straight out towards the Sound. It is a beauty.
