Thinking about taking the family on a winter trip around Christmas and thinking about NM. Leaving from BR and would prefer to drive for added flexibility. Two Kids (ages 7 & 10). Wife nor kids have ever skied, I have a couple of times but by no means am I proficient. Looking for something budget friendly (say under $400/nt) with good terrain for kids and easy access to amenities like restaurants, etc.

Thanks

RR is great. We have a couple of condos there and go at least once per year. My wife and I aren't skiers either, but it's a casual enough kinda place where you don't feel as if you're being judged for trying to make your way around the mountain. They offer classes for adults and kids, and there were a lot of novices when I took mine a couple of years ago.

There's a bunch of other things to do as well. We go snowmobiling quite a bit and the ski area has tube sledding. Each year we've been there during the winter we have been pounded with snow, which is always cool for a kid from New Orleans who now lives in Central Texas. lol

It's a small town, so there's not a TON of stuff to do, but everything there is to do is within walking distance - especially if you stay in town. There's a handful of restaurants (steakhouse, Italian joint, brewery, pizza joint, and a couple of others), but you will likely post up at Red River Brewing Company most of the time (kid friendly - they just can't sit at the bar with you. I learned that the hard way when trying to watch the LSU/OU game last year. lol).

RR Brewing Company

The only negative I will say is the timing, but I assume this is because of school...and I totally get it as we have the same issue. Christmas week is their busiest week and it's packed. If you have set dates, then let me know and I'll check if the condos are rented. If you're interested, then I'll send you the links to them and you can decide.

Welcome. Let me know if you need anything else, or if you decide to go to RR.

If you want a mountain town experience, I would definitely go RR over AF. I go to AF a lot in the summer for downhill mountain biking, and there really isn’t much there as far as amenities. Beautiful, but kind of just a resort. RR is much more of the quaint, walkable mountain town.

It looks like NM is requiring all visitors to Quarantine for at least a week when arriving into the state. Do you know if that is correct?

Everything I've seen about NM says 14 day quarantine. I wouldn't plan on NM.

Their level may have changed, but we went to NM twice during COVID. One time there wasn't really any quarantine in place. The other time, it was 14 day quarantine OR a negative COVID test no more than 3 days prior to entering state.

That being said: no one checked anything at any point during either trip (though the tribal lands were completely shut down with checkpoints to get in).

Still applicable, according to the states website linked on Angel Fire's web page. Were going there in Feb. So I've been keeping an eye on it.
