Antarctica is the only continent I have not visited. Has anyone here been there? If so, would you tell me about your trip?

I haven't been, but I did visit Ushuaia, Argentina back in March, and that's where most of the Antarctic cruises depart from.

Normally, you'd expect to pay about $10,000 per person or more for the cruise, in addition to your flight to Ushuaia, but prices are really low right now for future bookings (obviously, cruises aren't running right now), so it might be a good time to plan for a trip in a year or so (our winter).

Near Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego National Park is really pretty, and I definitely recommend a couple of days hiking there.

Other than a ticket which gets you onto a proper vessel, what does the 10k include? How long is the trip?

They have to be smaller boats. My understanding is that the big cruise lines run cruises that go near the Antarctic Peninsula, but that no one gets off the big boat, because there's a legal limit of 100 people going to shore from any boat.

So, the boats that actually let you set foot on the continent, have excursions, and see wildlife up close, etc. are all smaller boats that are built differently because of the ice and also the strict environmental requirements.

And the traditional trip is 10 or 11 days. If you want a little longer than that, a lot of cruises will add a stop on the South Georgia islands, and that adds more to the cost.

A quick look showed some prices as low as $6000 available right now.

I started exploring this earlier this year. Already decided on 2024 to allow time to save 20k for the wife and I. Looking for smaller 100 ish people boats max with ample time on the ice. Good luck with research, I'm still very early in learning as well.

I worked with an old boy who had a girlfriend who had done 6 months in a research facility for many years....apparently they are one big old group sex party with some science tossed in for appearance sake.

I looked up south pole trips last night out of boredom. That costs about 51 grand from Punta Arenas

I’ll save that for an older man pipe dream

I'm going to do this in the next few years, hopefully 2022. The tour I'd like to do is 20 days and hits the Falklands and South Georgia Island as well as Antarctica. The 2021 trip is $13K per person and unfortunately means sharing a room with a stranger unless I can convince a friend to go. The cost of having your own cabin solo is VERY high. There are lots of different tour companies and generally they book space on a ship so there are multiple tour groups on the same sailing. I plan to see some of Argentina/Chile as well, if I'm going to fly to Ushuaia I want to see a LOT.
