Northeast US trip/Montreal

Thinking about flying into Boston and making a Boston—Cape Cod—Portland ME—Montreal—Boston loop this summer. I’ve already seen Boston, but figured it would be a good starting point. Have done NYC many times. Any cities/towns/sites in the path of this general loop that is a must do/see? Maybe somewhere in Vermont or Upstate NY? The Catskills?

If you're thinking Vermont the two big choices are Stowe and Burlington. Stowe is a nice mountain town with good restaurant options and nature to explore. Trapp Family Lodge is there as well as a tourist-y type thing. If you stay in Stowe you can drive over Smuggler's Notch and take the long way back to I-89 and up to Montreal. Burlington is the only real city. Nice pedestrian mall called Church Street with outdoor restaurants and shopping. It's also right on Lake Champlain so you got that as well. From Burlington to Montreal it should be 90 minutes with a clear border crossing. Contrary to TulaneLSU's judgement there's not much to see or do in Montpelier.
If you decide to go up through NY on I-87 to Montreal there's Fort Ticonderoga and Saratoga Springs and the horse racetrack. I guess Lake Placid isn't too far off the interstate.
I'd recommend a stop in my hometown but I'm not ready to reveal that information.

I would skip Cape Cod
Hit Newport Rhode Island, Boston, up coast of Maine to Portland than up to Vermont/Montreal

I wouldn’t count on the border being open this summer. They don’t seem to be in a rush. But other than that, Stowe and Burlington are can’t miss places in Vermont. Hill farmstead in Greensboro Bend, if you like beer.

I love the Catskills, but the gems are so scattered about. One village will have the great breakfast spot (Breakfast Club in Jefferson), another a great deli/meat center (Sal’s in Bloomville), another a great dinner spot (Tulip and Rose in Franklin), and another the best brewery (West Kill in Spruceton or Catskill in Livingston Manor)..
It’s not quite the Catskills, just a tad north, but Cooperstown has a nice concentration of neat stuff. The Baseball Hall of Fame most famously, but other good stuff too. The Farmers’ Museum is great for history buffs, Main Street and Lake Otsego are nice, and there are 5 breweries in the area.
It would make a longer loop, but the Finger Lakes region is great. Waterfalls, wineries, and cool towns. Watkins Glen State Park is a must visit as are many of the other waterfalls in the area. The Finger Lakes region is also the largest wine region East of the Mississippi.

As someone always trying to find hidden gems in Vermont I'd really like to know.

Honestly didn’t think about Cooperstown and baseball HOF. Also didn’t consider Niagra Falls—worth a stop for a day or worth driving out of the way to see for an hour and keep driving? Cape Cod might get the axe, especially if the Cape Cod baseball league is not running.

I did that trip 2 or 3 years ago sans cape cod. I preferred Waterbury to Stowe as stowe seemed like a tourist ghetto, but they are only 10 minutes apart. Burlington is nice but I spent one day at a beer festival so didn't get to see a whole lot. Montreal is a great town. But I wouldn't count on much being open this summer in any of those places.

lazy, were you on the east side or west side of Waterbury? Basically was it the side of Ben & Jerry's and closer to Stowe or the side closer to Warren/Mad River?
