Airbnb vs a hotel? Is a car needed to rent or is Uber sufficient? What area is best to stay for food/ city but outside city enough to enjoy the outskirts too.
Doing some research but wanted to get the opinions of others.

Dripping Springs. Love that area and it's just outside of Austin.

I really like the east/ central districts. Close to downtown and Rainey street bars.
I don't mind walking a lot though to get places.
The bbq joints, shops and local bars look nice.

Should be a bit safer to do this in the next few weeks. Austin started evicting the "campers" this week.
What a shite show... on so many levels.
As for places to stay, your post above me was pretty solid. Staying out in Dripping Springs kind of necessitates a rental car. Staying downtown does not.
I may get blasted to hell for this comment, but I wouldn't waste my valuable time with Franklin's BBQ. I'd go to Black's -- less hassle and just as good meats and sides.

That was gonna be my next question.. do i wait in line for hours at Franklins or was there other places just as good. Stiles Switch was listed up there as well.
Which bars are better than others?

I'm partial to Rainey over anything East or West Sixth. More of a day drink guy, so late-afternoon (when most bars open) through early evening is more my speed.
Aside from that, someone that lives in Austin may have other suggestions.

Rainey street looks interesting. Sorta why I wanted to be on the East; close to downtown and Rainey.
Looking at end of June.

Yes.
If you can spare an evening, take a ride out to the Oasis on Lake Travis before sunset. It is a touristy place, for sure, but the food isn't terrible, the view is fantastic, and they usually have some good bands playing.

I like it. Still a younger crowd + can get busy, so be forewarned if you’re older. However, the people are more put together than what I see on Sixth.
Also, I just find the bars to be so much different than what I find in Chicago, which is part of the reason I prefer Rainey. I love the converted bungalow houses with backyards to hang out. Such a different aesthetic than what I’m used to up here.

West Sixth and Rainey St. are nicer than Dirty Sixth (East Sixth). I haven’t been downtown for a night out in quite a while, mainly because I didn’t want to deal with all of the “urban campers.” We have some cool little bars and restaurants in our neighborhood, so we’ve mainly been sticking close to home.
