How does your league set divisions?

Our league usually tinkers with the divisions each year. Im looking for suggestions on how other leagues do it. What do yall find is the best way to set the divisions?
Random?
Commissioner pick?
Last season W/L?
Height/weight?
I kinda like the idea of a little mini competition to set the divisions. But maybe im overthinking it.

If it’s a regular snake draft, we set it based on the draft order.
12 Team league:
1, 4, 7, 10
2, 5. 8. 11
3, 6, 9, 12
Or we randomly draw right it after the draft.

We have 3 4-team divisions which are named Red, White and Blue.
1st and 3rd place stay in the same division. 2nd and 4th move to the next division (Red -> White, White -> Blue, Blue -> Red).
We do it just to mix things up every year...

Have a North vs South league.
Thats literally 6 people North of the Mason Dixon line and 6 south of it.
Then we have one league that is 10 teams that doesnt do divisions.

4 divisions of 3 teams. We do a divisional draft every July.
Teams that finishes 1st-4th draft the guys they want in their divisions.

Three divisions of 4 teams. We put all the teams in a hat and pull for divisions. Division names are thought of each year - weathermen, famous subdivisions, New Orleans area bars etc
