Hungarian Parliament from across the river at night is a pretty sight to see. There’s an art museum up on a hill in that same area that’s not bad. That’s all I remember about Budapest. I wasn’t there long.

There's a pretty neat cave under the palace that was turned into a field hospital during WW2 by the Germans (and later used as a bunker by the communists). It's worth taking the tour if you're in the area.

Also the Terror House Museum is good if you like history. The museum is located in the police headquarters that was used by the Gestapo and later the communists. There are numerous exhibits detailing the horrors and struggles the Hungarians faced by both groups and is a good way to learn about the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

Also, I second the recommendation of Prague. Overall I liked Budapest a little more than Prague but had a great time in both cities. Beer is cheap and very good in Prague.

Budapest is actually two cities Buda on one side the river and Pest on the other side. Must see Parliament House, Opera House, Gellert Bath house, Heroes Square, fisherman’s bastion, st. stephens basilica, and stroll along the promenade

Budapest is great. Check out some ruins pubs (Szimpla Kert was cool) and the baths.
Faust Wine cellar was great and super cheap. Would highly recommend (Reservations recommended, but we got lucky and someone had canceled when we showed up).
Fisherman's Bastion and go up to Castle Hill.
We did a cheap river cruise that was fun. Great views of the parliament building from the river.

We took a train from Prague to Budapest and it was enjoyable. Careful with cabs in Budapest. Some will try to screw you. Not sure about now, but a few years ago, there was no Uber/Lyft.

As others mentioned, definitely go to Prague. Great city.

Budapest to Vienna is an easy train ride. When I saw the Budapest train station, it felt like a third world country… but you go a couple blocks and it looks like Paris. The ruin pubs are great. Prague is cool. Took a bus from Budapest to Prague and definitely wouldn’t recommend that. Check on the Covid entry requirements for individual countries… they may be different.

Budapest had Uber when I went 2 years ago. However, the Bolt app was more popular in that part of Europe and seemed slightly cheaper than Uber.

And these requirements seem to fluctuate by the individual states within some EU countries as well.

Christmas markets will be open during that time. 20 days is a long visit, so you’ll definitely want to explore other places nearby. Vienna. Great wine stops in Austria. . Lake Bled in Slovenia. Poland is nearby but would recommend flying. Wiz air should be your go to out of Budapest.

Lived in Budapest for 2.5 years.
