It would be embarrassing if an AD had issued a quote like this a year ago. Good thing this quote doesn’t exist

quote:

I think if I were in Lafayette’s position, I’d be trying to figure out a way to move up to a level, like Conference USA. And so, you know, congratulations on that conversation,” McClelland added. “But I think for us, you know, you’ve got understand… if we all of a sudden decided there was going to be a membership expansion in Conference USA, I think there would be numerous individuals from that league that would be interested in joining and paying a premium that we all pay to be in this league.

USM is well past embarrassment at this point.

The school has been heading downward for about 20 years due to administration issues and the athletic department is broke, in part due to mishandling the football program after Larry Fedora left for UNC.

I also think they can’t afford a CUSA buyout unless someone either fronts them the money or the entire conference dissolves and leaves them with no liability for a jump.

Current rumor is that Marshall will be the team joining with Southern Miss. if Marshall and USM join, along with Florida Atlantic, Charlotte, North Texas, UTSA, Rice and UAB going to the AAC, CUSA will cease to exist.

If they can pull it off, more power to them.

USM is the last remaining charter member of the conference. Them leaving and killing the conference has symmetry to it.

MArshall and Southern Miss in the belt would be great adds for the conference from multiple standpoints.

For what it’s worth the SunBelt making strides… Arguably the best or second best group of 5 conference

Wouldn’t be shocked to see the MAC entertain the idea of WKU and MTSU

Yep - now way MTSU and WKU stick around for that hot mess.

You structure the leadership at CUSA like what was done and everyone will seek another home.

I don’t see how CUSA survives. It will be interesting to see what Louisiana Tech does. Their conference history has been tied to the west.

Wonder if their old Big West and WAC relationships will save them? I am guessing there is too much bad blood between the SBC and Tech for that to ever happen.

Maybe but the conference won’t dissolve unless it gets down to 3 teams and those teams would have to vote to dissolve it. They won’t give up their auto bids or their exits fees. They’ll add FCS transition schools and get it back to 8-10.

There are always schools looking to add. Like I said, won’t be pretty, but a conference isn’t going to die. It just doesn’t make any sense. Why give up an automatic berth and exit fees just to go independent?

Have you heard anything from Ruston?

I stated in another posted that some of those in Ruston have a develish grin - like they have an ace in the hole. But they ain’t talking.

I don’t see an out - unless what I was told a few months back shakes out - but I don’t see that now.

LaTech and ULL AAC applications were not accepted…so…who knows

You have to find schools willing to join.

That is what killed the WAC, as they pretty much got down to about 5 schools, couldn’t find enough teams to continue as a FBS conference, and everyone went their separate ways.

Idaho, New Mexico State, and about 2-3 other schools were still there but no one wanted to join them.

CUSA has it a little easier because they are generally in more densely populated areas (mainly the southeast US) but you have to either be able to get FCS teams to transition to FBS or you have to get independent teams to throw in with you.

I could see a number of schools wanting to move up to a depleted CUSA. That said, there are no more chairs in the AAC or SBC for them to take the next step. So who knows.

Seems AAC is just interested in markets so our teams never had a shot.

When I said CUSA would die, I was saying for all intents and purposes. That group possibly minus WKU and MTSU is easily the worst conference.

It has been radio silence for weeks. Regardless of what happens, we’ll recover. Realignment is nowhere close to over. Big boys will make more moves in the coming years and it’ll shift things downstream.

Tech needs to focus on building the facilities they planned to and improve the program. They’ll find a home eventually, even if things look dire for a few years. It wasn’t pretty when everyone left the WAC and we survived.

We never sent an AAC application. With the current conference predicament, the administration is ok with the Sun Belt.

You would hope so. Used to be an awesome G5 program.

I went to a game there late in 2004 when Cal came to USM ranked #4 with Aaron Rodgers, JJ Arrington, and Marshawn Lynch. Like 25,000 people had that place rocking and USM took them way deep into the 4th quarter. Fun as hell.
