LSU will have back to back 1st rounders. They have proven themselves to develop elite corners out of high school.. but in back to back years, LSU is going to miss out on a top 10 corner.

What am I missing here?

Nobody wants to play for a lame duck coach. Let the hire play out and I think that number will change

corey raymond is the db coach

a lot of kids biggest influencers are the ones that recruit them, namely the position coach

so really the question is what’s up with raymond and the lack of talent at a position he coaches these last few years

I’ll be more than happy with Welch, Rhym, Ausberry as the corners in this class

I started a thread last year about how we weren't in it for any top rated CBs. I mentioned we might not be DBU anymore and got crucified (what did I expect lol). But again, we are underperforming again at the CB position.

My memory serves me well and we were always grabbing at least 1 top 5 guy, and often the #1 CB. Not so much any longer...

I mean you can't ask for much better than ricks, stingley, and flott in the nickel.

Rhym and welch are really good.

To me welch is a top 5 corner.

Welch is definitely an elite CB. He's probably underrated if anything in the services. He's borderline 5* if he's not one.

True but we will always have good to great corners. Our stumbling block in recruiting will always be QB, OL and DL.

When a coach comes along that can recruit these 3 positions good we are going to roll. Heck, Kirby has kept Georgia in the top 10 for a while now simply by making sure his DL and OL are stacked.

What you are missing is WHY these guys are first rounders. It has little or nothing to do with LSU. These were the top corners in their recruiting class. They were always going to be first rounders.

LSU produces the best DB talent because they get the best DB talent. It's not due to coaching. It's been this way since I was a boy in the 70's. Back then most of the best talent, like Ed Reid, went elsewhere, but South Louisiana was ginning them out like a factory. A lot of them were not rated high, either, because Louisiana has so many it's hard to keep track of them all.

I disagree; it is both.

Rankings are nothing but a projection- especially 247 that gives out 5*'s to projected NFL draftees. Projected being the key word.

From there it takes coaching, no matter how good the team is, to really play at a P5 level. Then there's another step to play in the NFL- sometimes big, sometimes small. But going from HS to the SEC requires coaching to take the player the rest of the way.

That delta or distance to go is where the recruit comes in. I lower ranked recruit has farther to go being developed, so it takes more time. He might get there before the draft, he might not. The delta is so small for a Stingley the necessary coaching can get him there before he's eligible. But it is still necessary coaching.

We had quite the run there for awhile.

Going backwards on 247 back to 2010:

2020, Ricks

2019, Stingley

2018 (Surtain - FFS)

2017, Vincent (Top #10)

2016, Fulton

2015, Tolliver

2014, (Tony Brown - FFS)

2013, Tre White

2011, Jenkins (and I don't remember him)

2010, Mathieu (just outside the Top 5 at #6 on 247)

What stands out is that Bama has a lot of years with 2 or 3 guys in the Top 10. UGA, too, recently.

I think people are forgetting how dominate Greedy Williams was. He was a low four star that no one thought would be elite NFL talent, that kind of development takes coaching!!

I think last year they just needed to focus on other positions, like safety and nickel. We pulled 2 top guys at those spots as well as an underrated guy that will definitely shine when hes ready. I think they figured they would wait on corners till this year but then getting fired threw a wrench in that. Also,Macglothern was rated just outside of being a 5 star at one time if i remember correctly but him moving around constantly and some other issues dropped him some 350 or 400 spots. I personally think he could turn out to be a day one or two pick if he keeps improving and stays healthy. I think a lot of guys on here freak out too easy. LSU will get this thing going in the right direction soon. SW isnt going to let the program stay where its been the last 2 seasons. Just have a little faith and some patience. It cant go any faster than its going

Raymond has Flott and McGlothern looking good. DBs have been locking up and that’s without our two all Americans.

Raymond is hands down the best coach on the team.

Hell even Evans, who was getting toasted last year, is playing good football.

Corey Raymond is the best DB coach in the business and has been for a decade.
