In the next four posts are the keeper rankings, I have sorted them by their, but this is a pretty brief write-up on each. The number next to each team represents tier-rank. With only eight players each, it is very interchangeable and the gap between keeper sets could be very small. I honestly believe that all fourteen could contend this year if they try to build a competitive roster through the draft. I apologize in advance for any dropped words or errors. This was not worth editing, but let me know if you want to send you a copy of the Word document.

Tier 1 = below average, Tier 2 = average, Tier 3 = solid, Tier 4 = very strong

Tier 1

Rick 1-14

Lucas Duda, Corey Seager, Yoenis Cespedes, George Springer, Nomar Mazara

Hitting: I would have bought a keeper instead of Mazara. Springer and Cespedes form a strong outfield punch and Corey Seager appears to be a franchise cornerstone. A little better hitters than I anticipated, but I really thought he would buy a keeper or two.

Jon Lester, Adam Wainwright, Masahiro Tanaka

Pitching: Rick has three quality arms, but no aces. These are fantasy SP2 and SP3. I think they will get the job done, but Rick is looking a little light (cue ironic joke) in strikeouts, especially in a K/9 league.

Overall: The keepers are a little light, but there is potential for three stud bats and the beginning of a core. With good management and hitting on a couple draft picks, then anything is possible. Even ranked last in this cursory rankings, Rick can definitely make the postseason.

G$ 1-13

Chris Davis, Kyle Seager, Lorenzo Cain, Carlos Gomez, Evan Gattis

Hitting: Crush Davis provides the pop for this team. Kyle Seager will quietly continue to be a very good player. Lorenzo Cain is a phenomenal athlete, but I think 2015 was his peak season. Gattis scares me, but I think he should earn enough plate appearances for 25 bombs.

Johnny Cueto, Steven Matz, Wade Davis

Pitching: Not a fan of keeping closers, but hard to argue against Wade Davis with his elite stuff. Cueto should bounce back in San Francisco, but this pitching is definitely thin. This is probably my least favorite group of keeper arms (especially considering that there are three), but Cueto’s potential in San Francisco could make me eat my words.

Overall: The bevy of high picks will help add to a fairly weak collection of keepers. There is no top end talent here, but there is more than enough quality to compete. It will be interesting to see how he uses his three first round picks.

PCT 1-12

Albert Pujols, Maikel Franco, Jose Reyes, Adam Jones, Carlos Gonzalez

Hitting: Outside of Franco, this group is old. It really shrinks Port’s window with some of these guys, but I know he will supplement these pieces through the draft, free agency, and trades. Also, I still think Jose Reyes sucks and that does not include the fact that he could be facing a lengthy suspension.

Garrett Richards, Danny Salazar, Carlos Rodon

Pitching: Port went the opposite of his hitters here because this trio all scream upside and electric stuff. Richards throws gas and has great spin rates, but he is yet to collect the massive K rates that we are all waiting for. Salazar is a strikeout machine. Rodon’s WHIP was awful in 2015, but you have to keep an arm with that talent. All three of these guys have SP1 upside.

Overall: This group of keepers is below average, but I can almost guarantee Port will trade half of them by Opening Day. I think he will be a buyer in 2016 and built around this talented group of live arms.

Tier 2

Gyno 2-11

Eric Hosmer, Troy Tulowitzki, Charlie Blackmon, Jorge Soler, Gregory Polanco

Hitting: I feel like Blackmon and maybe Tulo are the only studs here, but I could very easily look and be blown away with what this group produces. Hosmer has become very good, and he could still grow. Soler and Polanco are slight gambles, but their ceilings could send Gyno to a high playoff seed.

Zack Greinke, Stephen Strasburg, Yu Darvish

Pitching: Man, these are some big names on Gyno’s staff. Greinke will be just fine in Arizona. Outside of Kershaw, he seems to be the safest every single year for a sub 3.00 ERA. Strasburg still has super elite stuff, and he should return to the ace tier. Darvish was a smart buy since Gyno sold at the 2015 trade deadline, but I think he may struggle to regain his command for a while. We are only coming up to a year removed from his torn UCL.

Overall: The starters get me excited, but this keeper set has a massive range. Can Tulo stay healthy? What about Soler? How good will Soler and Polanco be? Regardless, Gyno will manage his team into a competitive unit and make lots of transactions.

Jew T 2-10

Kris Bryant, Carlos Correa, Joc Pederson, Byron Buxton, Miguel Sano

Hitting: Bryant and Correa is probably the sexiest keeper duo in this league. For a team that used to be a free seven plus wins in a week, he has two first round players. The extreme rebuild is finally coming to a close as Jew T has found some studs. Sano could be Russell Branyan, but he could also be Chris Davis on Adderall. Buxton is no guarantee, but he could lead the league in stolen bases.

Noah Syndergaard, Aaron Nola, Tyler Glasnow

Pitching: The arms are still a little young, but he could easily supplement these arms with proven veterans in the draft. I think Nola could be an above average arm this year.

Outlook: I hope he actually drafts MLB ready players this year and tries to compete. If another young stud hits, then Jew T could return to the postseason. It will be good to finally not see this team just automatically fork over $100 and play for next year.

LE 2-9

Brian McCann, Edwin Encarnacion, Ian Kinsler, Ryan Braun, Brett Gardner

Hitting: Outside of E5 and Braun, this group seems a little lackluster. However, Brett Gardner is continuously underrated and puts up Mookie Betts fantasy numbers with a lower OPS. I used to be a huge Kinsler fan, but his power has disintegrated.

Chris Sale, Gerrit Cole, Ken Giles

Pitching: Chris Sale will continue to be arguably the best pitcher in the AL and simultaneously flummox every medical professional with his delivery. Gerrit Cole pairs nicely as the second ace of the staff and should be a nice core that will only be supplemented by the ratios and saves of Ken Giles.

Overall: I do not love this group of keepers, but there is enough talent here. Some of the guys could be boring, but McCann is the favorite to lead his position in power once again. More importantly, it is very rare when LE does not have a dangerous fantasy team.

Clams 2-8

Kyle Schwarber, Freddie Freeman, Evan Longoria, Addison Russell, Andrew McCutchen

Hitting: I remember when I used to fear the bats of Clams. Crazy that his team never won a title in the four years that I have been in this league. Schwarber has great fantasy potential, but it will likely drop a tad in 2017 if he loses his catcher eligibility. I do not see Addison Russell or Christian Yelich as keepers in this league. They are much better real life players.

Clayton Kershaw, Jacob deGrom

Pitching: However, Clams always has a penchant for top shelf aces. These two aces have to be the best pair in the league largely to Kershaw.

Overall: People seem to forget that half of the league’s categories are pitching. If Clams builds a top bullpen and adds a few other starters, then he can pitch his way back to the playoffs. I just do not see enough power here.

Broeho 2-7

Jose Altuve, Jose Bautista, Michael Brantley, Hanley Ramirez, Prince Fielder

Hitting: Altuve and Bautista form a perfect power and speed. Besides these two elite options, Prince should provide more pop, but I do not Hanley and I am terrified of Brantley’s shoulder. He may not be ready until May.

Cole Hamels, Marcus Stroman, Aroldis Chapman

Pitching: I think Cole Hamels is a little underrated this year. He has a great track record and is incredibly consistent. Stroman certainly has potential, but I think he is a fringe keeper with a fairly small track record. Aroldis Chapman is the king of the ratios, but I am a tiny bit afraid that Betances or Miller sneaks the occasional save and Chapman gets less innings to keep all three elite relievers fresh.

Overall: Two stud bats lead the way, but what Hanley will show up? There is more than enough talent in the first eight to return to the playoffs with a full slate of picks.

Tier 3

Dallas 3-6

Adrian Gonzalez, Robinson Cano, Justin Upton, Yasiel Puig, Billy Hamilton

Hitting: Gonzalez is the Steady Eddy of baseball with massive RBI totals every season. You cannot go wrong with Gonzalez at first. Robinson Cano was a fantasy liability in 2015, but you just have to hope that it was a fluke. Otherwise, he will only be a keeper in name. I am not a Billy Hamilton guy since he is a miserable “hitter” and his floor is as a pinch runner/defensive substitute.

Dallas Keuchel, Carlos Carrasco, Trevor Rosenthal

Pitching: Last year’s AL Cy Young was fantastic to watch as he induced grounder after grounder. I will miss him on my staff. According to some people on FanGraphs audio, Carlos Carrasco has the best stuff in baseball. There is no doubt that he is a very talented pitcher, and I trust their claims. It sounds like could he contend for the league lead in strikeouts.

Overall: Cano, Hamiltion, and Rosenthal are not ideal keepers, but this was a strong team last year. It will be interesting to see where Justin Upton hits in a loaded Tigers lineup. Puig is still young and very toolsy, so he could regain his elite keeper status quite easily.

Chat 3-5

Buster Posey, Dee Gordon, Josh Donaldson, Jacoby Ellsbury, Yoan Moncada

Hitting: I remember when I joined this league and could not give away Buster Posey. Now, Chat has the only elite fantasy catcher and it gives him a huge leg up behind the plate. Dee Gordon is the man in roto and the premier SB option because he could be helpful in three categories. Josh Donaldson is the reigning MVP and will pace this team again, but I do not understand keeping Moncada. He was in A ball in 2015.

Max Scherzer, Luis Severino, Lucas Giolito

Pitching: Scherzer is arguably the second best pitcher in baseball even with an August that saw get destroyed by homers. However, his final start of the year reminded how he sometimes challenges Kershaw. Severino is pretty weak by keeper pitcher standards. Lucas Giolito seems like the next big thing, and I expect him to debut in 2016.

Overall: I think Chat went too heavy with the super young players, but four fantasy studs will allow him to put a winning product on the field. Having elite outliers (Posey at catcher and Gordon in SB) will give a unique edge in certain spots.

Tier 4

Lou T 4-4

Joey Votto, Todd Frazier, Bryce Harper, Mookie Betts, David Ortiz, Matt Carpenter

Hitting: There are a lot of studs in this lineup with four top bats. Votto continues to be one of the game’s best players and Todd Frazier should continue to be a fantasy star in the Cell. Bryce Harper has already exceeded the hype. I am not convinced that Mookie Betts is a fantasy star that some experts are touting him to be (top five OF), but there is no doubt he is a strong 20/20 threat and very talented ballplayer.

Madison Bumgarner, Felix Hernandez

Pitching: Bum is the steady ace that continues to do exactly what you look for in an SP1. King Felix finally seems like he is beginning to slow down after an incredible decade. However, I am more than willing to believe that he can return at least close to his 2014 form (2.14 ERA).

Overall: Lou T has built a strong set of keepers that should contend. However, there are no locks as Ortiz is in his curtain call season and Hernandez has thrown a lot of innings. Also, what kind of batting profile will we see from Matt Carpenter? The 28/101 power line from Carpenter was one of the true shocking stats from 2015.

Will 4-3

Jose Abreu, Rougned Odor, Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Mike Trout, Starling Marte, Jason Heyward

Hitting: Trout, Machado, and Abreu is a trio that may only be matched by Earl’s top bats. Marte is pretty filthy as well, but I am a little dubious that he will repeat his 18.6% HR/FB rate. Projection systems believe in his 2015 season and show room more for growth. Bogaerts could be a strong keeper for years to come even though I think Will has owned him since birth.

Chris Archer

Pitching: Well, Chris Archer is an ace. He is coming off a 212 IP season with a 2.90 FIP and 10.70 K/9. I really wish the Cubs never traded him.

Overall: I think the Rougned Odor hype train has gone too far, but he is a serviceable keeper. Heyward will score runs for days hitting in the one or two hole for the Cubs and this team will score the most runs in the league based on keepers alone. Will certainly has the makings of a title contender.

VKC 4-2

Anthony Rizzo, Brian Dozier, Nolan Arenado, A.J. Pollock, Nelson Cruz

Hitting: I am so happy to have built the infield of my dreams even if the cost was high. Rizzo is a true superstar, but Joe Maddon’s green light on the base paths could make Rizzo a top five player or better. I think I like Dozier in fantasy more than anyone else in the world. I do not expect Nolan to fully repeat 2015, but he blossomed into the first rounder that I believed he would be. Pollock exceeded all of my wildest expectations and will be a great five category contributor.

Jose Fernandez, Matt Harvey, Corey Kluber

Pitching: I have always tried to load up my teams with stacked starting pitchers and this trio is no exception. I think that this is the strongest group as all three of these guys are arguably top 10 starters. I am a tiny bit concerned about Harvey, but his stuff is so electric and he is now further from TJ.

Overall: Last year was the greatest fantasy season that I will have ever in my life as I hit on everyone, but it led to a nasty 2016 keeper set. However, you cannot win a title on eight guys, so I need to find this year’s Pollock and Keuchel (if they exist) to repeat.

Earl 4-1

Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Rendon, Giancarlo Stanton, J.D. Martinez, Miguel Cabrera

Hitting: Goldy, Stanton, J.D., and Miggy is just unfair. Year in and year out, I marvel over Earl’s hitters. His team’s pop seems to be generally unrivaled and can only be slowed by down by health. Goldy is a consensus top three pick, Stanton is an outlier among power hitters, Martinez is a stud, and Miggy is Miggy. Man, this group is loaded.

Jake Arrieta, David Price, Sonny Gray

Pitching: Arrieta and Price make up another team with two bonafide aces. I have heard how Arrieta is going to regress from 2015. Well yeah, but he can still regress a good bit and easily be a top 10 SP. I can never get aboard the Sonny Gray train, but I think he made look a little foolish with his better K rate.

Outlook: For at least the third straight season, I feel like Earl has the best set of keepers. I know it does not automatically translate into success, but it would take a combination of bad luck, drafting, and team management to miss the playoffs with this core.
