He is a monster, but I could not go for the $34 or whatever he went for. No reason he cannot lead the AL in bombs.

0-2 on waivers from the 5 spot, awesome

I guess I've never paid attention to it but has the tiebreaker always been reverse standings?

I also put in three waiver claims for my DL'ed player. Just in case. I wasn't going to pay any money for this player

Yes, it has to be reverse standings as the tiebreaker. ESPN does not have any other options.

I did some serious work on preseason rankings. My goal is to finish tonight, but I will be at the Braves game.

For this year’s barely preseason rankings, I have written a paragraph on each team’s offense, pitching, and overall thoughts, respectively. In a redraft league, it gets very tough to separate teams, so I broke everything into tiers.

Tier 1 = Great
Tier 2 = Good
Tier 3 = Poor
Tier 4 = Bad

You will see a triple slash next to each team representing their offense/pitching/overall using the above tier system. I will also be providing some values of players who stood out for me one way or the other listed below the three paragraphs for each team. The offense and pitching sections do not average into your overall rankings. They are all determined individually, and it is a completely arbitrary system.

The “preseason” rankings ended up being over 4,700 words with zero to minimal editing, so please excuse any typos and ask if there is any confusion. Most importantly, these rankings are for fun and are far from a lock. I once predicted Thomas as the worst team in the league and he won by a lot with probably the best team in the history of VIAC. I also thought Barry wasted $3 on Trout because he would spend too much time in the Minors and would have an adjustment period. I think we all know what happened.

Team name offense/pitching/overall

1. Mr Wiseguy 1/3/1
2. Beach Bengals 1/2/1
3. Vick’s Kennel Club 1/3/1
4. McCringleberry 2/1/1
5. PSU2LSU 2/2/2
6. Florida Tigah 3/1/2
7. The Express 2/3/2

13. Tubby 4/4/4

Schwarber, Dee Gordon, Joey Bats, and Sano make up the four big bats, but there is some serious bust potential here between Schwarber and Sano. As a whole, I fail to see where the hitting numbers will come from as Bour should not be a starting first baseman for this league, Buxton looks lost at the plate, and Story is potentially wasting away on the bench. I love the Plouffe and Valencia buys, and I think they combine for 50, yes 50, homers. Trading away a $39 McCutchen for two pieces that add up to $27 makes no sense to me. I get that you cannot be a slave to auction values, but this trade was right after the auction. Dee Gordon will win you steals, but they came at a massive cost.

Jake Arrieta set the tone early at $30, and it made me decide that I will not pay more than $25 for an ace. I like Betances at $5 even if he records zero saves because his ratios are disgusting. There will be enough saves here with Kimbrel and Ziegler, but Ziegler could have more saves than K’s. If one of his other relievers ends up with the closing gig, then Tubby will be sitting pretty in saves. I did not get the Gio Gonzalez buy as his WHIP approached Greinke’s ERA in 2015. There are only four starting pitchers, and there is a massive drop-off after the ace.

Tubby purchased five of the first eleven players nominated (and nine of the first 34), and I find that there can be a bit of a tax on those guys since everyone has fat wallets. I would never buy non-star level players that early in the draft. While it is still very early, I feel comfortable starting Tubby at the bottom.

Great values: Addison Russell 13, Trevor Plouffe 1, Danny Valencia 1

Good values: Dellin Betances 5

Poor values: Byron Buxton 9

Bad values: Dee Gordon 40, Kyle Schwarber 31, Gio Gonzalez 8

12. Honkus 3/4/4

Four players went for over $50 in the auction. Honkus owns two of them. After Goldy, Travis d’Arnaud, Kolten Wong, and Matt Duffy man the infield. I still think d’Arnaud can hit up to 25 bombs and be a top five catcher if he stays healthy. Wong is a 20-20 candidate and Duffy is an inexpensive stabilizer. After Goldy, the only hitters who cost double-digits are Nelson Cruz, Miguel Sano, and Lindor. Honkus made a very smart trade to acquire Andrew McCutchen shortly after the draft. Lindor is a major regression candidate, but he is still a top five SS. Granderson, Ozuna, and Schoop are the most interesting cheap purchases as they all could have major power. Vogt was a steal at $2 and the entire catcher market was very cheap. Carlos Santana was a steal at $4, and he is a guaranteed value in this league where I think he will hit around 25 homers with an OPS of .800.

Clayton Kershaw is undoubtedly the best pitcher in baseball, but I cannot fathom paying $54 for him. For that price, I could have bought Arrieta + Greinke, Sale + Felix + $1, Harvey + Bumgarner, etc. After Kershaw, the pitching is quite barren. McCullers is on the DL, I am afraid Anibal Sanchez is about done, and Vince Velasquez was due to extremely poor budgeting. Three closers are nice, but not when one of them is Fernando Rodney. As Rondo said, the only thing Rodney saves you from is winning. Colome ended up getting the gig, but he has no closing experience.

I always have to punish a team in the rankings who broke the cardinal rule of an auction draft. Leaving $28 for your last two players when they should have cost maybe $10 combined is brutal. The addition of Cutch is huge, but it hurts to start off dropping $106 and then not buying until it is too late.

Great values: Travis d’Arnaud 5, Carlos Santana 4, Marcell Ozuna 2, Stephen Vogt 2

Good values: Kolten Wong 9, Jonathan Schoop 6, Curtis Granderson 3

Bad values: Clayton Kershaw 54, Fernando Rodney 4, Vince Velasquez + Alex Colome 28

11. Loose Cannon 4/2/3

I know that everyone constructs teams in different ways, but I fail to see where the pop is coming from. Power builds the categories for you, especially in an OPS league, and I need more than Kris Bryant, Cargo, and my boy Dozier. (I think I may have forced this board to inflate his price due to my undying fantasy love for an underrated fantasy stud). Despite the lack of power, I absolutely love Gregory Polanco because he has the best chance of being this year’s AJ Pollock. Brett Garnder always produces more than his AAV, so $4 makes an absolute steal. I do not think Revere was a necessary buy, but this team will eat up runs and stolen bases.

Chris Sale, Gerrit Cole, and Carlos Martinez form a filthy trio, but Cole at $30 was very costly. I have always like Mike Fiers, and he can rack up strikeouts even without league average velocity. Ian Kennedy, Mike Leake, and RA Dickey may be more of net negatives than anything with ERA’s likely starting with a four. Spending $20 on two solid closers is a very nice value, but a closer in Colorado is always a little scary. The back end of the rotation is pretty weak and you may be better off only playing them on occasion and let the big trio plus Fiers and Buchholz do the heavy lifting.

Between the lack of power and overabundance of bad fantasy pitchers, I am not a huge fan of this team. Xander Bogaerts should be very good, but I do not like paying for a shortstop. The position scarcity is too costly. Early on, I think this team will be middle of the pack at best.

Great values: Gregory Polanco 18, Brett Gardner 4

Good values: Jake McGee 7, Mike Fiers 1, Clay Buchholz 1

Poor values: Gerrit Cole 30, Xander Bogaerts 22

Bad values: Ben Revere 6

The Astro tax was by far the heaviest one in our league as Correa and Altuve cost more than anyone not named Trout, Harper, Goldschmidt, or Kershaw. It was costly, but Altuve will set up this team in runs and steals while producing across the board. My boy, Nolan Arenado, will crush for Thomas, but he will always be mine. After the superstars, Justin Upton went for a cool $31, and I like him in roto because his streaks will not kill you. I do not know enough about Byung Ho Park, but I stayed away with too much of an unknown for his price. Duda was a great deal at only $4, but Reddick may have been the biggest steal at only a dollar. I know a lot of people are down on Brandon Crawford, but you can afford huge regression for only $2.

The ace pairing of Harvey and Archer is elite, and I believe that the combo of Familia and Britton is the best in the league. I do not have the best feeling about Harvey, and I sure hope I am wrong as I own him in my keeper league. Thomas got really unlucky with Storen being the bridesmaid, and I did not see that coming at all. Francisco Liriano at $8 was really nice as he strikeout 200 hitters without a huge price tag. Karns and DeSclafani are both interesting to me, but I think this team could use another starter or two. I can only hope that Ubaldo is limited to spot start duty.

The bullpen is strong and the starters are great through the top three. Outside of Altuve, this team will be hurting on the base paths, and I feel like the power output is a little too dependent on Park. Then again, the Cardinals players will probably play out of their minds to pick up any slack.

Great values: Lucas Duda 4, Brandon Crawford 2, Josh Reddick 1

Good values: Nolan Arenado 42, Francisco Liriano 8

Poor values: Jose Altuve 45, Byung Ho Park 14

Bad values: Drew Storen 8 (not your fault)

Mike Trout is absolutely fantastic, and he certainly justifies being worth over 20% of the total budget, but Correa for $46 is just crazy to me. Going 25/25 with a nice OPS is not worth that price because Ryan Braun went for $22. Positional scarcity cannot be worth that much. After that, the power could get a little bit weak even Belt breaks out for 25-30 homers. I am not sure if there are four guys here who hit 20 long balls. Despite mostly middling power across the team, I think Ian Kinsler and surprisingly Brett Lawrie could fill up the stat sheet. I am not sure if Victor Martinez will be healthy enough to produce, but there is also that 2% chance he plays again at an MVP level.

Man, this pitching is deep and strong. Price is the ace and Chapman is the shutdown closer, but the true strength is in the depth. Wacha, Wainwright, and Lackey should all help out in the ratios with decent strikeout potential between Wacha and Lackey. I think Justin Verlander could have a massive year as he has learned to pitch without overpowering velocity. He could be a $20 pitcher like in the old days where he was a $30+ ace. With everyone else going down, Jeremy Jeffress is the Milwaukee closer by default. I am pretty sure this is the only team with four closers (even though one is suspended), so that is a huge leg up on the entire league. Of course, the other benefit of all those relievers is the strong ratios that generally come along with it.

The top two bats are studs, but I have a hard time liking the rest of the offense. However, I know that this team’s bread and butter is in the pitching depth. I am afraid this team has a lower floor due to the volatility of pitching, but I think Mike Trout alone can keep a team alive.

Great values: Brandon Belt 13, Aroldis Chapman 11

Good values: Justin Verlander 7, Shelby Miller 2

Poor values: Jacoby Ellsbury 13

Bad values: Carlos Correa 46

8. Prison Mike 1/3/2

Miggy, Donaldson, and Votto – oh my! That is a trio that is guaranteed to crush offensive categories, especially OPS. When you throw in a beast like Ryan Braun who missed 25/25 last year by one steal, it is hard not to like the offense in at least four categories. However, this team is station to station and will steal nothing. I do not love punting categories in a non-keeper roto league that is often very close and competitive. I like the Corey Seager buy at $16 for a potentially elite SS, and I thought $18 was not too bad for Rougned Odor’s borderline out of control hype train. Christian Yelich needs to change his batted ball before I ever purchase him, but he is a good ballplayer. If Russell Martin repeats 2015, then Prison Mike will lap the field in OPS.

My goal was to purchase aces under $25 because I figured the difference between most of them was not that massive. Corey Kluber ended up being the cheapest at a mere $21 (I paid $22 for Carrasco). I love the Taijuan Walker bet for only $9 because he could be a $20 pitcher this year if all breaks right. The same logic applies for Rodon, but I am not sure I would have wanted both of them. Yu Darvish will probably be a waste of money/DL spot for half the season, but it is hard to hate a $6 gamble on a possible second-half ace. Even though Ken Giles being a $14 non-closer, the Roberta Osuna news more than makes up for that as $15 for the pair is more than fair. This is by far the most boom or bust staff.

There are too many gambles on the pitching side, but this team could run away with the league in a best-case scenario as he could have three aces in the wings. I would probably suggest trading a decent piece like Alex Gordon for some steals, or you will get one point in that category.

Great values: Ryan Braun 22, Corey Kluber 21, Roberto Osuna 1

Good values: Donaldson 44, Joey Votto 31, Taijuan Walker 9, Carlos Rodon 7

Poor values: Ken Giles 14 (not your fault), Christian Yelich 7, Yu Darvish 6

7. The Express 2/3/2

The one thing I notice here are that the bats are really, really old. However, every single starter has 20+ home run power. Rizzo is the only bonafide stud, but let’s not forget that Carlos Gomez and Adam Jones were first round picks just last year. Interestingly enough, Jones almost put the same numbers as every other year and saw his price tag drop. I am not a Robinson Cano guy, but he has been an elite fantasy player before. I knew my friend would leave the draft with Alex Rodriguez. There is value in veteran bats, especially if they have pop. Of course, an old team will struggle badly in stolen bases.

There is no true ace, but Thor certainly has the potential to be one. The Mets and Padres pairs form a nice rotation, but Tyson Ross can murder your WHIP. With all of the veteran in the bats, the arms are pretty young and Raisel Iglesias and Aaron Nola are a very solid back of the rotation. There should also be plenty of saves between Robertson, Papelbon, and Grilli. There is a lot of good pitching here, but nothing great. As long as The Express gets enough innings, then he should be around average in four categories and do well in saves.

Spend big on bats, get proven vets, and find upside arms is exactly how I thought my friend would build his team. I like a lot of the cheaper investments and Matz for $6 is in contention for best buy of the entire auction. If this team got every player at their peak, then the league would be over as he owns seven current or former first-round picks.

Great values: Steven Matz 6, Corey Dickerson 5, Jason Grilli 3

Good values: Carlos Gomez 22, James Shields 5, Khris Davis 2

Poor values: Troy Tulowitzki 25, Tyson Ross 12

6. Florida Tigah 3/1/2

I am sorry about Pollock because he should have been a steal at $29. He is easily a $35 player. Abreu, Prince, hopefully Puig, and possibly Longoria will provide a lot of the power for now. A $18 gamble like Puig is always a smart pick as we have seen that he can be a $30 player. However, I am not a fan of the $18 that you spent on Heyward. He is way better in real life than in fantasy, and he was definitely slapped with the Cubs tax. I will he need to produce close to 100 runs, 15 HR’s, and 25 SB’s to get any value from him. Moustakas is not sexy and someone I will likely never own, but he is only $3 for some nice stats. Marcus Semien is my favorite buy, and he could go 20/15 if all breaks well.

There are no weaknesses on this staff with Bumgarner pacing this group. Lester, Salazar, and Stroman are no slouches, and Quintana and Iwakuma are fantastic stabilizers. Danny Salazar could strike out 250 batters this year while Jon Lester could definitely still be a borderline ace. After being pumped up last year, the price on Stroman really dropped back down due to the ACL tear. For only $16, Florida could have three closers even if there is the potential for all of them to lose their jobs. Regardless, Andrew Miller at $5 is too cheap even if he records fewer than ten saves all year.

I love the pitching and the batting is not too bad. Unfortunately, the Pollock injury is keeping this team out of the top tier, which I realize is pretty unfair. ESPN loved this squad as it had Florida projected for a league-best 89 roto points. Even down a star, he can still contend for a title and Billy Hamilton will pick up the missing steals. An interesting fact about this team is that there are no $1 players.

Great values: AJ Pollock 29 (at the time), Marcus Stroman 8, Andrew Miller 5, Marcus Semien 3

Good values: Yasiel Puig 18, Danny Salazar 12, Starlin Castro 5, Mike Moustakas 3

Poor values: Jason Heyward 18, Jonathan Lucroy 7, Josh Harrison 3

5. PSU2LSU 2/2/2

When I look at this offense, I see a lot of mashing. Stanton and Crush Davis are the sexy sluggers, Ortiz and McCann are the veteran power bats, and Chris Carter and Pedro Alvarez could provide very cheap pop. Six players could hit 30+ home runs. After the home run hitters, the Texas duo of Andrus and Delino DeShields, Billy Burns, and Cesar Hernandez will light up the base paths. I think the OPS could suffer a lot, but the counting stats will be more than fine. Even though he came through waivers, Brad Miller is very interesting to me, and his ESPN projections are filthy. I do not believe that David Ortiz can hit his projected line, but he will be undervalued at $17 if he hits gaudy 36/102 with an .891 OPS line.

I think that Max Scherzer is the second best pitcher in fantasy baseball, and I was lucky enough to watch him live on Opening Day. I think we see an ERA around 2.50 with 250 strikeouts this season. Mighty Max needs to control the long ball, but he will dominate. Sonny Gray and Cole Hamels really out the top end of this staff, and I love that Hamels only cost $11. Kazmir and Chen will be rotation stabilizers, but I would like to see another one or two of that quality pitcher added to the staff. Kenley Jansen makes a strong case for the #1 closer for 2016, but JJ Hoover could hurt more than help. Luke Gregerson getting the closer’s gig changes the shape of this pen.

The offense will come to play in the four counting stats, but OPS could get ugly despite the power. The saves should be there, but I think K’s may be average at best. Regardless, this team could be above league average in as many as eight categories.

Great values: Cole Hamels 11

Good values: Pedro Alvarez 6, Delino DeShields 2, Jerad Eickhoff 1

Bad values: Elvis Andrus 6
