For me, the mixes ARE the base. I start with those rather than tomato juice or V8. There are some good mixes out there and there are some bad ones.

I just dont ever buy more than one bottle of vodka.
I just keep one in the freezer...and its Goose or Kettle
Well I keep a full bar so at any time I have 7-8 different kinds of vodka.

and I do know that the last time I ordered a bloody mary and didnt specify the vodka, it tasted like shite. they used whatever the well vodka was at the bar. I couldnt even finish it.
Then it was a shitty bloody mary, had nothing to do with the vodka.

the sorts of vodka you use matter very little if at all in bloody mary's - unless you just have the need to feel better about your station in life
I cant believe nobody has mentioned the best additive to Bloody Mary's:
wasabi

quote:oh how i love horseradish in my bloody mary's.
would have extra horeradish for anyone who would like to add some kick
i'm sure it's been said, but pickled green beans or homemade pickled cauliflower.
Zataran's made these kick arse olives once upon a time. I dont know if they do anymore- they had a ton of pickling spices in them. I could only find them at Zuppardo's for awhile. Anyone know if they still make them?
quote:interesting...never tried it
wasabi
and, IMO, the brand of vodka doesnt make or break a bood bloody mary. It's the way it's made, spices used, etc.
and now I REALLY want a bloody mary.

At midtown Spec's they have olives with onions or garlic stuffed in the middle that go good in bloody mary's.

quiet you. I'm off the hard stuff for another couple of months.
It's hard to fight the urge of a good bloody mary.
I've tried them- they're good stuff. Not a huge fan of the anchovy filled ones- probably because I didnt know what to expect and I ate one without knowing.

It's ok to drink after the first trimester.

Nice touch! People out here LOVE to put horseradish in their BM's but I can't stand it! I guess I like mine the way that Spahr's makes them and can't think of them any other way.
Like I said I normally use this, but wasabi would be good too!

then you'd hate wasabi, since it's in the horseradish family

Yeah, I know. I guess my point is that out here they just load up on that shite! I would prefer they actually just use Worcestershire sauce, which many places out here don't use.

Taaka is fine for bloody mary's, you can't taste the difference anyway. Save the good vodka for when you're drinking it with a little tonic or soda.
Or you buy Sobieski which is almost as cheap as Taaka (1/2 gallon for $17) yet rates higher than Grey Goose...and save all of your guests killer hangovers. And yes, even in a bloody mary, you can still tell crap vodka from excellent vodka.
Posted on 4/7/09 at 4:55 pm to DEANintheYAY
it was Skol vodka in the first one.
you think there is no difference in Skol and Goose?

Maybe with Skol, but IMO top shelf vodka in a bloody mary is not critical and I would bet that with a decent bloody mary you couldn't tell the difference.

I have never tried this but for $17 a 1/2 I would like to give it a shot!

This vodka debate should be it's own thread.
First of all...you can taste the difference and for anyone that wants to buy me a couple of bloody mary's, I'll show up for the taste test.
Second...you sure as hell can tell the next morning.

quote:that's a good one. I forget the name, i'll post later with it, of another brand that i get from Specs. It's ~$15 cheaper then Grey Goose and it's amazing stuff.
Sobieski

I'll throw a Joe Namath out here...I guarantee you'll love it and you'll switch. There's just no reason to spend $65 for the same amount of Goose when Sob rates higher. Everyone I've given it to has converted.
It was recommended to me from a guy at Martin's Wine Cellar.

I didn't say you could tell the difference between premium and middle range. I said you could tell the difference between Taaka and premium and also you could tell the difference between crap and premium.
