I'm not even from the South and I eat this. My preferred method is to drizzle a little Steens on top. Pure awesomeness.

My grandmother used give it to us warm when we couldn’t sleep. So good

My mother’s mother had this for supper as long as I can remember. Pretty much every night.

Put some canned figs in that and thank me later.
Yep, I've had it with figs which I like better if the figs are cut or broken up, cane syrup and even apple and grape jelly. Even with a lil sugar sprinkled on it. Same with cush cush.
Come to think of it more deeply, I remember when I was a little bitty thing and we'd visit my granndmother in the country she had everything canned. Especially figs and pears. Canned pears was good in it too!

My coonass wife laughs at me though and says she's never heard of anyone eating it that way before.
Your coonass wife might be lying about her upbringing if she claims 'dat!

My whole family does this. I think it is an abomination but I am also allergic to milk so milk itself is the devil to me.
Give me my cornbread whole with a little fig preserves on top. Peanut butter and syrup works as well. Though I prefer that on a biscuit.

Try making your cornbread with a duck egg.. Make that cornbread rise like a cake.

Will be by directly to revoke your Southerner Card. I just assumed everyone knew about this. Cornbread and milk in a tall glass, maybe some vidalia onion or fresh tomatoes with s&p to go with.
Born and raised in the South and I've also never heard of or seen this.

I've only known rednecks and depression era old people to do it and everytime i see it i want to boot.
The sight of it is fricking foul.
But enjoy nonetheless.

My grandparents had this -- usually with buttermilk -- for dinner every night for years. I never liked it much, but I don't like milk.

Seen this. My grandfather used to eat crackers with milk at least 3 times a week. Looked gross at the time but yeah it’s a depression era thing

I’ve heard people do it as sort of a Peptobismal type thing.

I had cush cush for the first time in my life as a college student. I went to my buddies house one weekend and his Mom made it for me. She mixed some leftover cornbread with a little bit of cold milk and some hot coffee, then sprinkled a teaspoon or so of sugar over the top. I remember it being really delicious and very unique. I've tried it a couple of times on my own but still can't get it to taste the same as I remember.

My dad did this but always in a glass

My mom and dad often ate cornbread and milk. My mom used to make Mexican style cornbread every Saturday morning. I always loved eating the hard crust and drinking cold Borden milk with it. Mom used a bowl with milk.
