Did You Ever Eat at Compagno's?

It was on St. Charles where Vincent's is now. It closed in 1998 per the cookbook I have written by Maria Compagno with restaurant recipes. I ordered the cookbook in 2018 and was sent a personalized autographed copy.
I loved the place and my Dad would take me for lunch now and then. They made a wonderful fried soft shell crab. We loved the house dressing made by Maria. I bought the cookbook just to get that dressing. They would sell it in the restaurant to a lot of folks. When I got the cookbook, I was surprised by the recipe. I would never have guessed the ingredients.
11 oz can tomato soup
1 can red wine vinegar
1 T garlic powder
1 T sugar
1 T worcestershire sauce
1/4 t black pepper
1/4 t salt
1 T yellow mustard
1/2 can water
1/2 cup olive oil
Mix all ingredients and refrigerate. One you empty the tomato can, you can use it to measure the other ingredients. Keeps 2-3 weeks. Yield: 1 quart
Anyone else like the dressing? Any other dishes there that you enjoyed? It was a neat place.

I loved that place, went often in the 80's and into the 90's. Sat next to James Carville there once but the food and service was still good anyway that day lol.

I made the house dressing Friday night. It didn't taste like much then. Tasted it yesterday afternoon and it was a whole different story. I had about 4 spoons of it. I don't know if it's exactly like what the restaurant served, but it's certainly very close and very good and different. It aroused my memory. We'll have some on salad this evening.
