No, but when you're going to start calling people out, try to figure out exactly what you mean first.

Yes you do. Nobody was calling anybody out in the thread. You were trying to disect the definition of a dive bar. To many people they mean many things, but fundamentals of a dive bar have several basic concepts and they've been mentioned. If you're not comfortable with pulling up at a bar stool and hammering a few back and making meaningless small talk at an off the beaten path, usually dingey and smokey, with a heavy handed free pouring bartender that looks like she's been smoking for 40+ years then you probably shouldn't worry about the definition so much, or you should just check out one of the fore mentioned bars in the thread and tell us how you would define it.

Not that I've seen.

I'm just going off of the definition originally posted for a dive bar.

The original post called someone out when he said there is a misunderstanding of what a dive bar is. I don't know who.

I get what everyone is trying to say. What about this:

A bar that has been around for 50 years. The owner has actually maintained the bar area and kept it clean over time. Not smelly. No roaches. Not poorly lit. Same old men sitting at the bar. Old bartenders. Is this a dive bar?

Ya'll seem to be blurring the line between dive bar and neighborhood bar.

To me a dive bar is sketchy to the max. That includes the clientele, whom should be genuinely unapproachable without some level of fear for your life/wallet. Go with friends when everywhere else is closed type of place.

"What the hell was I doing in THAT place." Should be your thought as you wake up the next afternoon.

Sure. A dive bar doesn't have to be dirty and smelly. Most do have a stench from all the cigarette smoking that has gone on in there. Dallas has a no smoking ordinance which is the only way I can tolerate dives for any longer than a beer now. We used to go in in, drink a beer and leave with out eyes burning.

And there are "new" dive bars which have only been around a few years but bring the mentality of the old dives. Usually the clientele are younger and more hip. I like some of these places too. But some of them seem like they are trying too hard.

Right. Like the pretentious people that have to tell us about how much of dive bar fanatics they are on the internet.

There also seems to be some confusion or maybe overlap between a "dive bar" and a "neighborhood bar".

I cant believe noone has mentioned it yet.. but

PORT ROYAL ... i mean, the place is connected to waffle house. it has smoke pouring out the doors when they are opened. Porn on the bathroom walls. Rough, hard look to the regulars.

Only thing is the drink selection is the best in town. And i definitely go there for the atmosphere and drink selection. Otherwise, its a Dive to a T.
