There will be some breweries that fail, but that will be due to crappy product or poor business plans.

My neighbor informed me last week that Fort Bend Brewing in Missouri City was shutting down. They really made a piss poor attempt to produce craft beer, so I don't know of anyone who's sad to see them go.

the craft beer bubble will burst eventually

I don't know when that will be, but it just cannot continue growing at the rate that it is all across the country

obviously some areas have some catching up to do

BMC might help by buying all the top breweries...

Ommegang is in New York... maybe you're thinking of Unibroue?

Canada has plenty of good craft from what I've heard, but not much makes it down south.

Yeah, I saw that on FB... I tried a few of their beers and they were nothing special. Especially compared to all the other breweries that have emerged in the Houston area over the last few years.

BS...

Maybe on the east side but spent some time in Vancouver/whistler area and it was severely lacking.

I'd like to see Texian in Richmond grow. I've enjoyed several of their beers, yet it seems Fort Bend typically got more preference than them on the store shelves.

Well I haven't been, but I've always heard that the Toronto/Montreal/Quebec area had a pretty good scene. The few that we get all come from that region.

Couldn't tell you anything about BC.

ETA: Toronto - looks like 30 breweries in the metro area.

Montreal - Looks like 22.

I'm sure they aren't all good, especially Molson, but still.

They are. and they should. they are a great example of people who were in it to try to capitalize on the growing craft market.

In short, their beer sucked arse. they started with like 4 different beers, an IPA, a stout, a blonde and can't remember the other but it was an unremarkable style. ALL OF THEM WERE HORRIBLE and worthy of the drain.

Their IPA was perhaps the worst IPA I've ever tasted.

their owners/operators were from the Distribution side and had big connections. they were able to get good distribution quickly across Houston allowing more people to discover just how shitty their product was much faster than other breweries. The market voted and they are shutting the doors.

Yea, Fort Bend sucked. The 4th beer was a farm house. Plus they tried to make a limited edition barley wine. Their problem was what you said, they were there to make money, not to make great beer. They had money and connections and thought that was enough to make it work..

There are pretty much two options right now for growing a craft brewery. Make kick arse beer that sells itself or make your brewery a destination and create a cult following. Some breweries do both, but you at least have to do one of those things. Fort Bend did neither.

Their farmhouse was alright. Never had the others that I remeber. Pedernales seems to be the same model.

Pedernales will probably work better as a destination though because it's right in the middle of touristy wine country.

I also think their beers are pretty solid, they aren't exciting styles, but they are very well made.

Chimay Blue. Smooth as a liquor with about as much alcohol.

agreed Chosen. they went to market with a shitty product en masse. a smart company would do as Lone Pint has done. start very small. dial in a couple of great recipes and worry about getting your product out in retail after your recipes are dialed in and production is mostly consistent. Use the early months/years to build a cult following who will basically become a free source of advertising and slowly ramp up distribution sensibly.

The owners at FB put $1.2M of their own money in it and sunk in 2 years. I have no idea if they just hired a bad brew master or had no idea what they were doing. I wanted to like them but they failed miserably

you had any stuff from Cyclers Brewery? they are an up and comer out of Magnolia or montgomery or some such. had their stuff at the Houston Brew Bash a few months ago and was very impressed. They are doing a bike and brew even on Saturday in Sugar Land. I think they are going to be really good brewery if they keep the current track.

I tried the IPA from Cyclers and it was nice. Same goes for the breakfast stout from B-52.

I don't know if either beer would make it in to my regular lineup, but they were pretty solid. I'd like to try some of thier other stuff.
