I'm assuming this was the case with the crowded entrance gate. At a minimum those booths that were on that side behind Christian Bros. near the entrance would have def. been able to be moved back off the path and spread out some of not for all of the water that they had behind there. My friend was on one of those teams and their grill ended up basically under water Friday night.

From what i noticed looking at all the menus it seems like this year people really went over the top trying to "out-create" one another. Wasn't really interested in how many variations on pork dessert and/or fricking mac n cheese they had out there. Best things I had were simple things.. ribs, pulled pork.

agreed on this. the competition was about ribs and pork. the rest was just window dressing imo.

I didn't really see anyone putting out brisket. Was this not really a big part of the competition? I know its "hogs" for the cause, but brisket should at least be given a category.

My thoughts on the setup and how HFTC went this year:

The layout:

Much better but might want to expand it a lil bit.

I did not like the 2nd stage in a tent and didn't even bother going in.

The food setup to the left of the main entrance and closer to City Park Ave....Make them competitiors BACK THEIR TENTS UP off the road. Most of the tents did this but there was a section at the bend in the road that 4-5 teams did not. It caused a bottleneck logjam because the space was too narrow for people to get through.

The food setup on the right on Wisnor was perfect.

More drink tents or better run drink tents (ala Jazz Fest).

1 type of ticket for both food and drinks. It was annoying. (or is that an insurance thing?)

A listing of what teams will offer to sell that we can print off the website would be nice.

A headliner band during the day would be nice.

Overall, I had a great time, got sunburned, stuffed my face with pork, and gave away $15 in tickets because I over bought b/c didn't want to stand in those ridic lines.

My plans next year: Bring chairs and set up a spot by the stage and then go walk around or Boss Hog.

haha. I had the exact same experience.

I knew I wasn't getting into that ticket line more then once. I seriously overbought.

I noticed they had draft beer in the music tent. Probably not worth having a draft vendor for this event.

Well I mean they aren't selling food anymore. I would have the headliner during the day or around 5 if it was me.

I liked it. Nice place to get out of sun, but need more bars.

The pic I have a few post above is the area behind those tents. It was a friking lake. Do you even water sports bro ?

Pat Green seemed drunk as frick. Either that or he has gotten a lot worse since the last time I saw him about 5 years ago.

It was pretty funny when he announced he had bought 100 beers and started to pass them out to everybody up front.

NMAS killed it and I was pleasantly surprised by The Hold Steady. Didn't really know what to expect with them.

I'm not sure which one exactly. We were at a distance and he pointed back and all I saw was one wrapped in a tarp.

With a lack of rain next year and some minor tweaking, this will probably be my favorite outdoor event in the area.

Oh yeah, I'd suggest a booth that sells sunscreen for idiots like me that didn't bring any.

The rain didn't damper my enjoyment. I went and bought some rain boots. Though it would have been nice to sit down at some point

That's last time slot is rough. I was really disappointed last year that RR had to play in that time. The fest is pretty much over and the energy is gone at that point.

My brother in law was on the Porkin Gently team. That was the team made up from the Company Burger and Cowbell people. They had what they called a "Boarchetta" sandwich. It was pork belly stuffed with andouille and wrapped in bacon. The put it on a ciabatta bun and topped it with a cilantro slaw. It was my favorite thing out there today. I also enjoyed the Hupig's pork pie too.

I thought that was pretty terrible. And I had high expectations b/c I LOVED their biscuit last year. (which somehow came in 36th place? WTF)

As someone else suggested, I think publishing the menus ahead of time sounds like a good idea in theory but it could potentially sway the judging.

+1

Deuce Pigalow' macaroni and cheese ball stuffed w/ pulled pork, dusted in bread crumbs, and deep fried.
