A Mama's Fried Chicken (the original is in Opelousas, LA) using their recipe for chicken and biscuits would be killer, but again.. $100,000 wouldn't get the grease heated..

What do you not believe and would like a link? Wines going up in value or that most wineries lose a lot of money ???
Well you are just making a general statement that unless you are Mr. Bartles or Mr. Jaymes I have a hard time believing.
I know several wine makers that do pretty well considering the cost of living in Napa and that is just the few I know which are small boutique guys. I'd be hard pressed to believe many of the large wineries lose money. Not that some don't but if "most wineries lose a lot of money" than we'd all be drinking beer and could afford to buy some cheap California agricultural real estate.
And buying high end wine is no different than buying Exxon stock. It might go up or it might go down. What if you buy your high end wine on the high end of the market? It's all speculating. What about buying high end homes? Cars? What's the difference? How do I get in on the low end of the high end business? Serious question.
It might be a good bet and one you would like to do. I just would prefer to invest in the actual production side of the business where I believe many factors can be involved in making or breaking and I believe the risk is manageable by myself/stockholders versus a speculative market.
And many wineries are not owners of vineyards. Most of the boutique people buy grapes for farmers or other wineries with vineyards and make their wine in cooperatives for not a whole lot of money. Rent a place to make wine, process, barrel, bottle, label and store. Sell on internet by word of mouth with very little upfront capital expense and very lean overhead. And if the wine is good they make money.

Please clarify. Is this about...
1. What your friend should do with his spare $100,000?
2. What you would do if your wife gave you $100,000?
or
3. What I (the board) would do with $100,000?
For your friend, with limited experience and just 100K, that sets two things in concret: 1) the size of restaurant and 2) the level of service offered.
This would have to be a small place with limited service. Small because that's all he can afford. Limited service because it simplifies things and his experience doesn't allow for anything more. So basically, we are talking about something like a small hamburger joint, sandwich joint or pizza joint.
As far you, 100K can't contain your ego. So, it's best to just talk about it and stay in the realm of dreams.
As far as me, I'm in a similar position as your friend. I would have to think small, focus on a two or three products, and be very selective about the location. I would pick a location first and then create a product for that market area. If what the market wants isn't something I can afford or do, then I would either move on the the next location or not do anything and bury the money.

It's just a discussion about what one would do if one had 100k to invest in something that would relate to food or beverage. I'm not investing nor is my friend. I just found it an interesting conversation and thought this board would appreciate the discussion as well. You aren't required to participate.

I would have thought the resident restaurant consultant would be thinking out of the box. Pizza and hamburgers? Really.
None for food related stocks? I have Monsanto, ADM, Bunge and Mosaic. World is continuing to grow and people have to eat.

Ok I'm looking in the mirror Pawl. It cracked. What now? At least I can create a discussion on the board Pawlie unlike you with your trademark shut up, jerk and yack posts.
How about trying to contribute once in awhile. I'm not on here to be your buddy-I like lively stimulating discussion and you don't seem able to keep up. And if you want to call me jerk again how about to my face? I'm at 1069 West Addison Street.

Well you seem to be hanging around my thread.
Apparently no one here has seen The Blues Brothers.
And Baton Rouge had a good Jewish deli on Government Street next to the Western Auto which is now Radio Bar and they had whole kosher pickles in a wooden barrel.

$75,000 in Rum, $ 20,000 in Cokes, $ 1,000 in limes and $4,000 in ice... That should do it.

Well where exactly did Elwood live?
And I'm thrilled you and Pawl are bonding. Ten bucks he lets you hold his weiner.

I always talk about if I won the lottery and semi retired what I'd buy. I'd open a neighborhood sports bar and do whatever I wanted with it
Then I'd franchise out a popular chain
Chick Fila is first choice but hard as hell to own one
Potbelly is my favorite sandwich shop and line is always out the door for lunch
Torchys Tacos is just insanely good
I'm also a big fan of the suburban housewife salad/soup lunch place. Always packed
Corner Bakery, paradise, Zoey's kitchen, baker brothers
