Is it bad that I'm apathetic after having this dietary nonsense shoved down my throat from ages 6-18?
Although I could go for some crawfish or seafood right now.

Same people who I go to LSU with who get raving drunk every weekend but say "Oh I can't eat a burger on a Lenten Friday" apply here as well.
I've always thought that was pretty funny. Whatever makes them feel better about themselves...
I had stuffed shrimp from Maple St Cafe. Just a coincidence that I had seafood on Ash Wednesday. Leftover chicken and sausage jambalaya for dinner.

Why do people who never set foot in the doors of a Catholic Church actually observe Lent? Certainly not saying you're one of these but just asking in general.
I'm atheist and I'm thinking of making some lenten promises
Mainly because I need to go on a diet after all the gluttony of this year so far

Ad pork jaouls, he'd cheese, and oyster bacon sandwich at cochon along w some Covington beer, got my ashes, now at Johnny whites. I am catholic, I ate meat, but I'm catholic.

Lenten promises are one thing and nothing wrong with that regardless of religion.
What I think is ridiculous is the people who don't eat a cheeseburger today or on Fridays because of religious reasons, even though they don't remotely do anything else religious.

I still get it when I happen to be dining with my parents on a Friday during Lent. Being in New Orleans, there's always at least one good seafood option so I never make an issue of it.

Yeah I agree with you there
I'm just doing it to test myself
Trying to go 40 days without alcohol and doing something similar to the paleo diet. Just no wheat or dairy.
No wheat, dairy, or alcohol for a month is really going to test my patience. I'll probably just smoke a lot more.

Certainly. It's also a great start for healthy lifestyle changes. If you can abstain from smoking/alcohol/coke/unhealthy foods for the duration of Lent, why not keep it going throughout the year or only indulge in moderation?

Agreed. Which is why I said it applies to many of the Catholic in-name only LSU students who only attend mass once every blue moon and party but feel the need to still partake in following Lent to the 't'.

Isn't a true Catholic not supposed to eat meat on any Friday of the year unless they do another penance?

It's a real sacrifice
We try to eat VERY light the entire 40 days. To me, it doesn't meet the meaning of fasting by gorging on seafood.

all excuses for people to eat seafood.
It's a real sacrifice
since when is seafood not meat anyway?
it's the flesh of an animal consumed as food.. therefore meat.
