Another Louisiana product name that needs protection, you may like a donut shop concoction with colored sugar on top, but its not a king cake. Its a big f*ck*ng donut.
A king cake is a sweetened baked yeast bread to be sold and served between All Kings Day and Mardi Gras. Have some respect for tradition.
I bought one of those "king cakes" from Meche's last year and threw it in the garbage.

FWIW the Tastee place on Transcontintental and W. Esplenade sells Mckenzies style king cakes. I have no idea how they "authenticate" it, but it says it on the package, so someone's giving them the right to do it. Dunno if any others sell it too. We got one yesterday, tastes about right.

i got a jays donuts king cake and it wasnt great by any means. i preferred wal mart kind with the granulated sugar. my gf, being from GNO area, bought me a randazzos king cake for my birthday(in August no less
) and i thought it was pretty good. my friends had a piece and thought it tasted almost lemony, but i could appreciate that thats what she grew up with. i grew up with wal mart kind so im fine with those. i havent tried all those mentioned, but i liked gambinos for filled and randazzos for the unfilled. to each their own

I bought a nontraditional kingcake from LaMadeleine's made with phyllo dough and cream cheese once that was outstanding. It was less sweet and colorful than traditional kingcakes and I preferred it to the original. It had a Virgin Mary doll instead of the baby.

To be outside the box of Randazzo's I would suggest Ralphs as well. Personally go for the Pralines and Cream Cheese if it is still there when I get to it.

Tastees bought that recipe along with some other ones when Mckenzies closed down.
