Actually you can reuse lump charcoal but I digress

yeah, If it hasn't burned to ash, the fuel hasn't been completely consumed, and it can be re-used. Or rather, used for the first time, because what's left was never used in the first place.

turn it upside down. If this is cumbersome, use a large scooping tool

Yea just lift a big fricking grill upside down

Get a tool for it, they make them for removing charcoal. You just scoop it close to the edge and have a bag at the edge of it and let it fall into the bag...throw bag away.

New to using a charcoal grill here and I have a dumb question. If I grill, can I reuse the charcoal a time or two in the chimney starter?

At least you knew it was dumb.

Don't clean your grill, that's where the flavor is.

Just empty out the coals and put some new ones in. It's not like we're facing a global shortage on charcoal.

Uh, the charcoal burns up, you get ashes. There should be a vent somewhere to push the refuse out of the grill.

No need to complicate your life with a messy ol' grill. Get a microwave!

I do.

I must be using the wrong charcoal. There are probably a few pieces that don't turn to ash, but come on.

If you use lump hardwood after you're done grilling, close all of the vents to extinguish the fire. After it cools, open up lower vent and push the cold charcoal around to let the ashes fall, collect the good stuff and reuse.

I use a Big Green Egg and do this all the time.

You can reuse it on your forehead the Wednesday after mardi gras. Palm smalm.

With lump I find I always have a good amount of charcoal left over, especially if I'm doing steaks over very hot coals that I put out after a short time burning.

If you're using briquettes then yeah, there probably won't be anything but ash left.

I re-use my charcoal all the time. When you are done cooking, shut down all the air dampers including the lid. When you want to cook again, scoop into a charcoal chimney and then shake off all the excess ashes and then light as normal.

It's possible to reuse charcoal mainly lump charcoal but it really depends on the type of grill you're talking about using. Personally I don't reuse briquettes but I do with lump. There's a big differecnce between the quality of the two.
With the grilll it depends on whether or not you can shut off all fresh air supplied to the charcoal. I here it's possible with a Webber kettle grill but with most Kamado type grills like Primo, Big Green Egg, and other insulated type grills you can indeed reuse charcoal. Then again with those types of higher end grills you should be using lump charcoal and not the briquettes. In fact that is a selling point of Kamado style cookers. You just stir around the charcoal before the next use to drop the ash and light it again but most times more fresh lump charcoal is added.

Now when it comes to cleaning the ash out you don't need to clean it after every use but maybe every 2nd or 3rd time. The cleaner it is the more effiecient charcoal will burn especially cleanly and heatwise.

I always place my charcoal over a layer or two of aluminum foil. I just carefully lift up the foil with the ashes on it and immediately place in a nearby trash can. Pretty easy clean-up.

I had no idea people were attempting to reuse charcoals.

This,

Also my Weber kettle has a tray that I can take out to empty the ashes.
