The goose/smirnoff comment got me too. What did that mean?
It sounds like your trip was doomed from the moment you walked in the door. The thing I don't get is that if it was so bad, why not alert management? I like to talk to management whenever things are going either really good, or really bad. I like to give them a chance to make it better, although sometimes they are no help. If they are good, they take the criticism/praise as constructive, and use it to build a business.
I can agree with you on the kids thing though. I have 2 youngins, and I realize that I can't always control them. Sometimes they are just having a meltdown. Sometimes, as sweet as they usually are, they just won't shut up. If this is the case, I go outside and calm them down, if they won't, I'll leave and take my food to go. It's the courteous thing!

You went at 5:30. That may be your problem.
unless the meal is cheaper at 530 or something

A seasoned pro giving advice. No matter where or when you dine service should never be an issue. If it is, management and ownership don't give a frick.

True, although I think it's bad form to walk into a place 5 or 10 minutes before closing.

I think it depends on how an establishments views their hours. if their hours are until 11 on the weekends and that means they stop seating at 11, thast different than the kitchen closing at 11.
it really just depends how the management approaches the hours.

I dunno. I just don't like walking into a place within 10 or 15 minutes of closing unless I really know the place or I ask first and they insist it's cool.

i get what you mean. i wish more establishments would clarify.
i worked at a corporate restaurant that said we would seat by ten, but we had to close the kitchen at 10:30.
i hated rushing the guests. last call was at 10:30 too.
we had a few people order large drinks and milk them.
that was a little much imo.

Well written, fair review.
I don't give Ruffinos my business if it’s my choice of where to eat. In my experiences, I don't feel like the food/service has lived up to the price tag.

No matter what time you go to a restaurant, the service & food should be consistent and the same across the board!!!

Ruff's is > than Gino's, Pinetta's, The Little Village, and DiGiulio Bros in MY opinion, but I empathize with you in dealing with children that are acting retarded in a restaurant. It's the parent's fault that this happens. As for the rest of your night, it happens everywhere from time to time. Good luck next time

Generally speaking, yes. I still say that people who cavalierly stroll into a restaurant five minutes before a late night closing and then hang out for awhile are assholes.

My wife ordered another wine, I asked what Abita beers they offered. Our waitress kind of batted her eyes and mumbled something about not being able to remember all the beers. I found that a little unusual, seeing as she worked there, so I said bring me an Amber, you must at least have Abita Amber.
I don't find that a little unusual at all. I'm pretty sure not giving a shite about your job and not knowing what's going on, what's on the menu, being able to describe it, and knowing what you have to offer is closely related to not caring.
It's not magic. If you put love into what you do, not only will you excell and not fail, but your food, your service, and the overall experience one has at a restaurant will reflect it without a doubt.
People just don't give a crap. That's the real problem.

it is good to see that there is a locally owned place that is not a chain here in BR that people actually have an opinion on and give a shite about .. not too many long threads around here these days ...

I'm told that chains make people give a shite about the food they serve. Supposedly, it inspires people to greatness.

Sadly, I've had better experiences at the Chains of late.

Sad is right...
This really shouldn't be the state of affairs here though. BR deserves much better.

i find there is complacency in general in the restaurant biz overall in BR .. it is mainly because we customers make it too easy for them to strive for mediocrity .. why bust your arse if you are going to get a 25% tip anyway ?

then that's the perfect opportunity to short the server his/her tip if they do not give a crap or are lacking with their service. That is complete BS in a supposedly fine dining establishment.

I love local BR restaurants. So much better than chains. After reading your review, I'd probably give you the same service because you sound like a complete douche. And who's to say you're telling the truth? I'd like to ask your waitress and your wife exactly what happened.
