Thats what I did.. For me it was more about having them go through the bit of craking it and serving it. The crab was good but yea I preffer blue crab as well. Overall aside from sushi and dim sum and the chinese food I was a bit letdown honestly. But the Dim Sum made up for most of that.

For Italian:
L'Osteria del Forno - in North Beach, very small place, probably ten tables, run by two women. Non fancy, but very good simple Italian food. Specialty is pork roast braised in milk.
Rose Pistola - also in North Beach, specializing in food from Liguria, in northern Italy, lots of seafood. Had many good meals there.
Perbacco - Financial district, used to eat lunch there probably once a week, never had a bad meal.
A16 - food primarily from the Campania region of Italy (A16 is the highway that runs through Campania). Very good pizza in the Neapolitan style, house made pastas, etc. Most wines on the list are also from Campania.
Acquarello - most upscale of all listed, near Nob Hill. Awesome food in a former chapel setting. Very good wine list, and fantastic service. Great spot for a romantic dinner.
Asian:
R&G Lounge on Kearny. Whole fried chicken is awesome but must be ordered 24 hrs in advance.
Slanted Door - been covered here. I've probably been there twenty times. It can be hit or miss, relatively speaking, but I think you'll like it. They have a wonderful wine list, very well chosen to match the food, not particularly expensive, and lots of unusual wines.
CA cuisine:
Blvd has been mentioned several times. For years this was my go to restaurant, but it's gotten more expensive, and I there are other places I'd rather go. That said, the food is still very good, and the room is beautiful.
I'd post more, but I'm sick and a bit foggy right now. As others have said, there are dozens of other fantastic restaurants in SF, many have been mentioned here. Stay away from Fisherman's Wharf, adn for the most part, Union Square, and you'll do fine.

If you're in fisherman's wharf, get an In-N-Out burger if you've never had one.
and go to the arcade museum. Cover is free but I spent about $10 in quarters playing tons of old games.

Dottie's True Blue Cafe for breakfast/brunch. Really good and reasonably priced. There is usually a line out the door to get a table.

This place is another one of my favorites. Great Neapolitan style pizza and wines by the glass. Sit at the bar.

Another great pizza place is Gialina. I went there in October with a buddy of mine and it's really good. It's not a red sauce and pepperoni kind of place, but I really liked it. I think I had a wild nettle pizza, which is much better than it sounds.

Thursday evening we had dinner at the Cliff House. Decent food, but the views made up for anything the food may have lacked.
Friday lunch was at The Slanted Door, which lived up to the great reviews by you guys.
Heading down to Monterrey tomorrow for a day trip. Going to try the cioppino at Phil's Fish Market in Moss Beach.

I would suggest staying away from tourist traps as well. Go to the mission and get a burrito. Go to China Town and eat dim sum till you pass out. Hit up NOPA or Nopalito, both great! IF you are here on a Thursday day, check out the Ferry Building which has street food vendors and produce great food.

Friday's dinner was at the Tadich Grill. The cioppino we had was the 2nd best soup/stew I've ever had. (Prejean's chicken and sausage gumbo is 1st)

Stay away from tourists traps near Fisherman's Wharf.
One exception I would say is Lori's Diner at Ghirardelli Square. Local chain. Great view and big breakfasts.
Also, check out Diners Drive-Ins and Dives. They did a show on San Francisco and I was ready to hop a plane.

We stumbled into this place Fior D'Italia when we were walking around. Apparently it bills itself as "America's oldest italian restaurant." In hindsight, that sounds a bit tourist-trappy to me, but we didn't know that shtick when we walked in. Either way, it was one of the best [italian] meals I've ever had.
