What I dislike is that I won't be able to play offline content offline even after I have paid for it without logging in once a day. I don't understand what the reasoning is behind this.
so have MS take your word for it? Is that your solution?
The online validation doesn't affect the initial purchaser. The every 24 hour check will catch the 2nd person in the used game chain.

Very true, but the concern is that you MUST go through XBL or PSN to activate those keys. Which is totally unlike a PC which requires only an internet connection.
So Xbox is going to shite on the very same retailers they need to sell their hardware.
Got it!

If they are going digital I don't even know why they need the retailers.

LOL . It would actually be good business to do it. Wal Mart does it all the time. GameStop needs MS much more than the other way around. The company with the most power "shits" on the other company all the time to make the best deals for themselves.
No matter what you believe, Microsoft's bottom line is well MS's bottom line. Customer satisfaction is a distant second, and GameStop's bottom line isn't even on the register.

They still have to get their hardware into people's hands, Broke.

Those stores aren't going to stop selling hardware as long as people demand it.

You're right and poor Amazon and WalMart are pretty small retailers. No business like Microsoft needs such small companies with such a small global footprint to move their products. It would totally make sense financially for MS to cut them out and piss them off.

LOL...they make nothing off of the hardware. True story. I think it's like $10-$15 and this has always been the case. They make money off of the other stuff you buy when you purchase the hardware including games. You take that away and they have no incentives to invest millions of dollars, manpower, and shelf space into your console.
Posted on 6/14/13 at 2:11 pm to stout
I am totally lost. If they make nothing, they shouldn't care.
Posted on 6/14/13 at 2:12 pm to Broke
They make nothing on the console, Broke. It's just a means to attract customers to buy other items that they do make money off of.
Retail uses loss leaders all of the time. You know this.
They make plenty off of the hardware and games. Do you go buy a console and not buy any games at the same time?

LOL, you just went from GS to Wal Mart in the span of 2 posts. Impressive.
Seriously, I think we can agree that Wal Mart is probably on a little better ground to challenge MicroSoft than is GameStop.
Regardless, EVEN Wal Mart won't be able to sell these keys without access to XBL. Yes, they were both giants and we can all assume they will reach an equitable solution.
Regardless, the point remains. The options of where to buy are going to narrow. Amazon,Best Buy, Wal Mart, they aren't going anywhere. But what about GameStop? Will digital kill them? Will Toys R Us get out of the video game business? Game Exchange? I mean there will have to be some practical limit to how many different companies are offering apps on XBL that essentially do nothing but allow a person to buy a game key.

Think about it, on steam you get a game for the true cost of the game, 5$-30$. On a console you have to pay for that PLUS any additional licenses for when you sell / trade / borrow / etc
this is complete horseshite

A lot of people, even bigtime PS4 fanboys on this site, hated Gamestop for this practice and not all of a sudden they love them. LOL

Hardware like controllers and headsets. Sorry I worded that wrong.
They truly make chump change off of the actual system.

You do realize you do not need an app on Xbox to retail redeemable digital keys. Right?
Also, who the F cares if a few places quit selling games. There will always be someone else waiting to fill that role.

Yes, I realize that. Now tell me how you would redeem said keys without an app smart guy.

Ultimately we should all care if what we want is the most choices at the best prices.
And of course there will always be new companies, some of them will even succeed.

I could make a strong argument that even the information of a downloaded game that is written onto your hard drive is enough to constitute a physical good.

I explained it already a page back, smart guy.
Guess what...Sony and Xbox have had it in place for years.
It's a GD digital key. Have you never bought MS points or PSN wallet cards at Gamestop and redeemed them to your account?
Same thing with a game.
You can go to Gamestop right now and buy Minecraft for Xbox. You do not get a physical game but rather a card with a digital key on it.
How do some of you not know how to redeem things with fricking digital keys baffles the shite out of me.

There are about 30 or so places right now on the net I can link you to that only sale digital game keys for Steam and PC.
You will have more choices with digital than you ever had with physical copies.

Fair enough.
Now explain why no one in the music industry ever said "hey guys if we get rid of used cd sales we could sell you mp3 downloads a LOT cheaper"
Instead, they did the opposite . They started spitting out 99 cent MP3s and the used cd market dried up on its own.
Video games could do the same thing if they wanted. Who the hell would go by last year's version of NCAAFB for $29 if they could download this year's version for $39? Quite a few less than go buy a used copy of last year's NCAAFB for $29 because they don't want to buy a retail version of this year's for $49. That's for damn sure.
You don't dominate a market buy threatening potential customers. You dominate a market by offering the best product at the best price.
