Hmmm...there are a multitude of formations that you can use. I personally prefer the 4-3-3 because that's what Barcelona uses and it gives you a wealth of attacking players in front of goal. The standard 4-4-2 is good for beginners just because it's the basic lineup and gives you many players in defence as well as midfield, while still giving you two up front.
Personally what I do whether playing online or against the CPU is I, obviously, try to keep possession as much as possible. I constantly pass until I find an opening that I can exploit. What I notice often with people playing online is that they constantly just ram their forwards through the defense hoping that the opposing player will make a mistake and when you're playing a person who is decent it is harder to do that.
So I mean, it may help you or not but it's just what I do and it seems to work for me.

I have only played random on line ranked matches before, so I'm not real sure how the league works. Do we just play every other league member three times?

it's bugging the hell out of me...I always make a few mistakes a game and end up paying for all of them
I don't know how they do it, where they keep possession so well.

I had trouble at first, but after a few games I was able to really pick it up. I actually score more by keeping possession than I ever did trying to ram through the defense; I'm also giving up less goals. I just pass, pass, pass from the forwards back to the midfield and so on, until I find a place to exploit. Of course it doesn't ALWAYS work, but I seem to be getting pretty good considering the first time I played FIFA online was Sunday.

i think that's what I'm gonna go back to doing...it's how I play when against the comp but when I play online I just try to ram forwards thru

I've read a few FIFA forums and noticed that a lot of people have complaints similar to mine in that the field is too small
you can cover so much ground so quickly that good movement and width of play aren't necessary

i hit the post all the time too...especially when I head crosses
